Full job description

The ASV Master is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the LeeWay Viper, an autonomous surface vessel (ASV). This position plays a key role in supporting unmanned marine operations, including real-time piloting, monitoring, and mission support. The Pilot will work closely with LeeWay Marine’s operations and technical teams to ensure that the vessel is operated safely, in compliance with regulatory requirements, and in alignment with project objectives.

Position Specific Responsibilities:

  • Pilot and monitor the LeeWay Viper during autonomous and remotely operated missions.
  • Conduct mission planning, navigation oversight, and real-time adjustments to support safe operations.
  • Perform pre- and post-mission checks on vessel systems, ensuring readiness and reliability.
  • Operate and monitor electronic navigation and communication systems, including radar, GPS, AIS, and ECDIS.
  • Maintain accurate vessel logbooks, mission records, and compliance documentation.
  • Support mobilization and demobilization of the vessel, including equipment handling and setup.
  • Troubleshoot technical issues and liaise with technical staff for system support, upgrades, or repairs.
  • Comply with all Transport Canada, IMO, and company safety management system requirements.
  • Assist with emergency preparedness, drills, and response procedures.
  • Collaborate with internal teams, clients, and partners to achieve operational goals.

Qualifications:

Valid Transport Canada Certificate of Competency (Small Vessel Operator Proficiency or higher; Near Coastal certification preferred).

  • Demonstrated experience as a vessel operator, watchkeeper, or equivalent marine role.
  • Familiarity with autonomous/unmanned vessel operations is considered an asset.
  • Strong knowledge of COLREGs and marine safety regulations.
  • Proficiency in navigation and vessel control systems.
  • Mechanical and/or electrical troubleshooting skills desirable.
  • Strong communication, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.

Job Type: Fixed term contract
Contract length: 12 months

Pay: $45.00 per hour
