POSITION OVERVIEW

The Engineer in Training - Drafting supports DESA Glass by preparing accurate technical drawings, models and coordinated documentation for glazing projects. The position is primarily a hands-on drafting role for a candidate with an engineering degree and technical background. Engineering support and development are provided through assigned work under the Technical Director and the responsible professional engineer. Drafting production is the core responsibility of this position. Technical development and engineering assignments will depend on project needs.

REPORTING STRUCTURE

Department: Technical / Drafting & Engineering. Reports directly to the Technical Director. No direct reports.

The Drafting Lead coordinates daily drafting assignments, drawing standards, production workflow and task tracking within the Technical Director’s priorities.

The Senior Design Manager provides design guidance and technical detailing support. Engineering tasks are assigned and reviewed by the responsible professional engineer.

Works closely with Project Management, Engineering, Production, Installation and QA/QC.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

· Prepare detailed 2D drawings and, where required, 3D models for curtain wall, window wall, storefront and other architectural glazing systems.

· Interpret architectural and structural drawings, specifications, approved details, sketches and engineering markups to produce coordinated shop drawings.

· Prepare elevations, sections, plans, details and assigned fabrication information using DESA templates and standards.

· Revise drawings from internal reviews, consultant comments, approved RFIs and engineering direction; maintain accurate revision and document control.

· Complete dimensional and coordination checks and support resolution of production and installation questions through the assigned reviewer.

· Assist with engineering calculations, technical data and performance reviews when assigned, within demonstrated capability and under professional supervision.

PRIMARY TASKS - DAILY WORKFLOW

· Confirm assigned priorities, drawing deadlines and required inputs with the Drafting Lead; identify missing information before proceeding.

· Check that reference drawings, specifications, RFIs and markups are current; use the approved project file structure and drawing templates.

· Produce and revise drawings and models; incorporate approved system selections, engineering requirements and project-specific details.

· Self-check dimensions, grids, levels, tags, quantities, interfaces, clearances and drawing cross-references using the applicable review checklist.

· Raise discrepancies and technical questions with the Drafting Lead or Senior Design Manager. Refer engineering questions to the supervising professional engineer.

· Submit work for review, record comments and complete corrections. Verify that markups are closed and revisions are identified before resubmission.

· Assist with fabrication details, material information and site revisions as assigned; flag changes affecting other drawings or departments.

· Update task progress, hours, revision records and outstanding questions; report blockers and deadline risks promptly.

· Support site verification or production reviews when assigned and appropriately trained; incorporate verified information through the review process.

Use self-checks and internal review before issue; apply reviewer feedback and record lessons learned to reduce repeat errors.

Identify and escalate details that may affect safe handling, fabrication, access or installation; follow DESA safety requirements during shop and site activities.

Support efficient material use, accurate quantities and practical detailing that reduces waste, repeated drawing effort and avoidable rework.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

· Bachelor’s degree in civil, structural, mechanical or a related engineering discipline, with an interest in architectural glazing and building envelope systems.

· Registered as an Engineer in Training with APEGA, or eligible to pursue registration; registration status to be verified during recruitment.

· Practical CAD drafting capability and ability to read architectural/structural drawings. AutoCAD proficiency is required; academic, internship or work samples may demonstrate capability.

· Knowledge of technical drawing conventions, dimensions, basic structural principles and organized document control.

· Experience with Revit/BIM, Bluebeam, LogiKal, Navisworks or Inventor is an asset.

· Glazing, fabrication or construction experience is an asset.

· Strong attention to detail, clear written and verbal communication, willingness to accept review and ability to manage assigned deadlines.
