Job Overview
ABOUT PMC:
PMC Energy was founded in 2008 with a mission to save energy for our customers. We use energy efficient HVAC equipment, modern open control systems and unique control strategies to fine tune building performance and minimize energy use. We have performed many successful building retrofits, saving our customers hundreds of thousands of kilowatts of electricity.
PMC has been built on the foundation of a multi-trade technical and engineering team working collaboratively to deliver a superior product and service to our clients. Our team currently includes electricians, building automation technicians, HVAC journeymen, G1 gas technicians, mechanical engineers and more.
We are seeking a dynamic and proactive Safety, Fleet & Employee Engagement Coordinator to join our team. In this vital role, you will champion safety initiatives, oversee fleet operations, and foster a vibrant employee engagement culture across our facilities in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Your energetic approach will help create a safe, efficient, and motivating environment where every team member feels valued and empowered. This position offers an exciting opportunity to make a meaningful impact on workplace safety, operational excellence, and team morale.
Core Safety Responsibilities
- Coordinate PMC’s safety program across service, construction, and office operations.
- Complete regular field safety visits and documented jobsite inspections across PMC locations and projects.
- Build relationships with technicians and supervisors so safety concerns are identified early and employees are comfortable reporting hazards and near misses.
- Coach employees in the field on practical hazard controls, PPE, safe work practices and proper completion of field-level hazard assessments.
- Verify that FLHAs are completed before work begins and reflect the actual hazards and controls—not completed after the work is finished.
- Coordinate and help facilitate toolbox talks, safety meetings and company-wide safety campaigns.
- Support the Joint Health and Safety Committee, including meeting preparation, documentation, recommendations and follow-up.
- Receive and review incident, injury, property-damage and near-miss reports.
- Assist management with incident and near-miss investigations using a non-blaming, root-cause approach.
- Track corrective actions to completion and verify that the action taken actually controls the risk.
- Maintain the safety dashboard and provide regular reporting on incidents, near misses, inspections, FLHAs, training, leading indicators and overdue corrective actions. PMC has already begun developing detailed dashboards and automated reporting that this person could own.
- Analyze safety information to identify recurring hazards, weak signals, regional differences and areas requiring additional controls or training.
- Maintain and organize PMC’s Safety Hub, including policies, safe work practices, job procedures, SDS information, forms and employee safety records.
- Coordinate required safety training, certification renewals and employee safety learning paths through PMC Academy.
- Monitor completion of safety orientations and required courses and follow up on overdue items.
- Coordinate new-employee and site-specific safety orientations.
- Develop and administer a practical subcontractor prequalification and onsite orientation process, including verification of workers’ compensation coverage, training and required safety documentation.
- Assist with internal and external safety audits, customer prequalification requests and implementation of audit recommendations.
- Participate in the development and improvement of policies, SOPs, forms and field-friendly safety processes.
- Help management communicate safety expectations consistently while avoiding unnecessary paperwork or processes that are difficult to use in the field.
- Promote positive safety recognition, including recognition for good hazard identification, near-miss reporting and proactive safety participation.
- Provide managers with coaching and documentation support when repeated safety expectations are not being followed.
- Coordinate emergency-preparedness requirements, first-aid resources, inspections and drills where applicable.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding employee medical, injury and investigation information.
Fleet and driver-safety responsibilities
- Coordinate PMC’s vehicle fleet records, assignments and day-to-day administrative needs.
- Coordinate preventative maintenance, repairs, tire changes, breakdowns, recalls and vehicle downtime with approved vendors.
- Monitor vehicle condition and appearance through scheduled inspections and photographs.
- Monitor driver-safety information such as speeding, harsh driving, collisions and repeated vehicle-inspection deficiencies.
- Follow up with employees and managers on unsafe driving trends in a fair and consistent manner.
- Coordinate vehicle incident reporting, insurance information and post-collision follow-up.
Employee engagement and field-support responsibilities
- Bring occasional coffee, snacks or small recognition items to field teams as part of planned employee-engagement visits.
- Recognize good work, safe behaviours, customer service and employees who support their teammates.
- Gather employee feedback regarding safety processes, tools, vehicles, training, morale and operational obstacles.
- Escalate material concerns to the appropriate manager while respecting confidentiality.
- Help coordinate field appreciation activities, safety contests, seasonal events and employee-recognition initiatives.
- Support company communications, newsletters and safety or culture campaigns.
- Help ensure remote and regional employees feel included—not only employees working near the main office.
- Assist with onboarding check-ins for new field employees during their first several weeks.
- Identify practical improvements that would make technicians’ work safer, easier and more efficient.
Qualifications and Experience
- National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) designation is preferred.
- Occupational Health and Safety certificate or diploma, or an equivalent combination of education and practical safety experience is considered an asset.
- Three to five years of occupational health and safety experience, preferably within construction, mechanical contracting, industrial service or another field-based operating environment.
- Experience supporting a COR-certified organization, participating in safety audits and maintaining a practical safety-management system.
- Demonstrated experience conducting field inspections, reviewing hazard assessments, investigating incidents and near misses, and tracking corrective actions to completion.
- Working knowledge of occupational health and safety requirements in the Maritime provinces. Experience working across multiple provincial jurisdictions is considered an asset.
- Strong ability to build trust with technicians, supervisors and managers and to coach employees in a practical, respectful and field-oriented manner.
- Experience coordinating safety training, certification renewals, orientations and employee safety records.
- Familiarity with fleet administration, driver-safety monitoring or commercial vehicle programs is considered an asset.
- Strong organizational, documentation, analytical and communication skills.
- Comfortable using Microsoft 365, dashboards, learning-management systems and electronic safety-management tools.
- Valid driver’s licence, acceptable driving record and willingness to travel regularly throughout Atlantic Canada.
- Current Standard First Aid and CPR certification, or willingness to obtain it shortly after hire.
Join us as our Safety, Fleet & Employee Engagement Coordinator to help build a safer workplace while energizing our teams through innovative engagement strategies!
