We are currently recruiting versatile, adventure seeking Servers for summer term positions at the Ptarmigan and the Tundra Pub!
JOB SUMMARY
The Server is responsible for delivering exceptional dining experiences by providing attentive and personalized service to guests. Duties include greeting guests, taking and serving food and drink orders, making menu recommendations, and addressing inquiries or concerns. Servers maintain a high standard of professionalism, cleanliness, and teamwork while preparing the dining area, processing payments, and ensuring compliance with food safety and liquor service guidelines. They are also expected to contribute to upselling, support promotional activities, and assist in maintaining a sustainable and welcoming environment for all guests. Basic math skills, menu knowledge, and a commitment to guest satisfaction are essential for success in this role.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Guest Service
- Uphold the Frontiers North Hospitality Service Standards to ensure an exceptional guest experience that exceeds expectations.
- Greet guests promptly and courteously.
- Provide attentive and personalized service to all guests, including remembering regular guests' preferences for a personalized touch.
- Make suggestions and recommendations based on guests' preferences.
- Answer questions about menu items, daily specials, featured entrées, and promotions.
- Inform guests of daily specials and menu changes.
- Take food and drink orders, ensuring accuracy and noting dietary restrictions, allergens, or preferences.
- Communicate order statuses and check in to ensure guest satisfaction.
- Handle guest concerns and queries, with or without management support.
- Respond to guest inquiries regarding take-out, events, reservations, and other services.
- Actively promote restaurant specials and seasonal offerings to enhance the guest experience and boost sales.
- Engage with guests during promotional activities, such as wine tastings or themed dinners.
Food and Beverage Service
- Deliver food and beverages to tables with exceptional attention to detail.
- Present food and beverages to guests in an appealing and informative manner.
- Top up beverages and attend to additional requests during service.
- Make suggestions for upgrades, wine pairings, side dishes, appetizers, desserts, and accompaniments to enhance the dining experience.
- Clear plates, glasses, and cutlery promptly after use.
- Help teammates during busy periods by running food, refilling beverages, or resetting tables.
- Process bills and payments accurately using the point-of-sale (POS) system.
- Assist with special events, private parties, and group bookings, ensuring all guests receive exceptional service.
- Follow provincial standards for safe food handling and cleaning procedures.
- Always practice safety requirements for serving liquor as per the Smart Choices for Responsible Service certification program.
Preparation and Maintenance
- Study and memorize the menu, including products, seasonal offerings, and features, as well as specialty beverages, wine pairings, and cocktail recipes.
- Prepare the dining room, service stands, and beverage stations before service.
- Complete pre-opening tasks, such as stocking server stations, prepping condiments and garnishes, and making coffee.
- Clear, set, polish, and clean tables, glassware, and utensils.
- Maintain cleanliness of dining areas, washrooms, and service areas.
- Restock server stations, clean drink dispensers, coffee machines, counters, and floors during closing tasks.
- Report any issues with restaurant equipment (e.g., POS, coffee machines, dishware) to management for prompt resolution.
- Adhere to sustainability practices, such as minimizing food waste and recycling.
SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- 1+ year of serving experience in a full-service restaurant preferred.
- Valid Smart Choices certification.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills in English; other languages are an asset.
- Demonstrated ability to use a point of sale (POS) system to place food and beverage orders and process payments.
- Basic math skills to handle billing, payment processing, and calculating tips or discounts accurately.
- Strong time management skills and the ability to prioritize tasks with minimal supervision.
- Flexible and resourcefulness to problem solve challenges that arise from working in a remote, northern location.
- Excellent customer service skills, including interpersonal skills, empathy, and patience.
- Must be able to work individually and as part of a team.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
- The ability to travel to Churchill, Manitoba several times a year and other locations by air, and/or train is required.
- Northern, remote location only accessible by train or air travel.
- Mix of restaurant dining room and commercial kitchen setting.
- Must be of legal age to serve liquor.
- Must be able to stand and walk for 8-12 hours per day, bend, crouch, and climb stairs.
- Must be able to safely lift up to 23 kilograms (50 pounds).
- Must be able to work in close proximity to a variety of potential food allergens including, but not limited to citrus, strawberries and other fruits and vegetables, peanuts and other nuts and legumes, pork, poultry, beef, bison, shellfish/seafood, fish, and other meats.
- Must be able to work in close proximity to a variety of cleaning chemicals including bleach and other sanitizers.
- Must be able to work flexible hours and split-shifts including mornings, days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Overtime will be required during evenings, weekends, and on holidays, especially during peak seasons.
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
