River Valley School is an independent school providing unparalleled education and character development for children aged 3 to grade 6. Our vision is to spark a love of learning in every child through the discovery of their individual best. We are a growing school with approximately 315 students within Bowness, Calgary, Alberta.

We welcome students who are gifted to those with learning or attention challenges. River Valley School students experience opportunities for hands-on learning and connections with the real world. We focus on high student achievement, but also on supporting the individual and their overall well-being and development. We are not a one-size-fits-all school. How we teach our students is determined by who they are, how they learn, and what engages them.

River Valley School is currently seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable Educational Assistant to work one-to-one with a student in Div 2 (one-year temporary contract). The successful candidate will be someone who embraces the unique talents of every child, creates a safe, nurturing and innovative learning environment, and strives to make a difference in each child’s life. Experience working one-to-one with young children is preferred.

Responsibilities:

Working in partnership with the classroom teacher and reporting directly to the Head of School and Academic Leadership Team, the duties and responsibilities of an Educational Assistant are:

  • Provide one to one support to an individual student under direct supervision of teacher
  • Assist the student in accessing classroom instruction and learning activities
  • Collect data for use in student evaluation including anecdotal records, checklists and record keeping
  • Work within established structures, including classroom management structures, behavioral rules and IPP expectations
  • Attend parent teacher meetings related to prescribed students
  • Participate in staff development training programs to improve job performance as well as faculty meetings and special events as assigned
  • Assist teacher in preparing instructional materials
  • Function as an appropriate role model for children, providing proper examples, emotional support, and a friendly attitude and general guidance
  • Adhere to the appropriate code of ethics and student confidentiality

Qualifications and Abilities:

  • Educational Assistant Certification
  • Experience supporting children with diverse learning needs in an educational setting is preferred
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others
  • Ability to remain composed during difficult situations and to handle sensitive information with confidentiality and integrity
  • Excellent organizational, prioritizing and time management skills
  • Establish a learning environment wherein students feel physically, psychologically, socially and culturally secure
  • Establish a positive professional relationship with students that is respectful of students’ human dignity and characterized by mutual respect, trust and harmony

Due to the nature of our work with children, proof of a satisfactory Police Clearance with Vulnerable Sector Check is a requirement for all positions at River Valley School.

Competitive compensation will be based on skill and experience. We follow a 10 month school schedule and offer benefits (after 3 months) including medical, dental, life.
