POSITION OVERVIEW

The Audiovisual (AV) Technician tier is responsible for the physical installation, termination, testing, and commissioning of commercial AV systems. Technicians report operationally to the Operations Manager, while executing daily field assignments under the direction of the designated Project Manager. Responsibilities span the entire project lifecycle, including cable pulls, equipment mounting, rack integration, system configuration, client training, and successful service handoff.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIESSystem Integration & Craftsmanship

  • Cable Infrastructure: Pull, dress, and label structured cabling (Cat6, coax, fiber, line-level audio, and HDMI) in compliance with AVIXA standards and local building codes.
  • Equipment Mounting: Safely mount displays, projectors, smartboards, motorized screens, loudspeakers, and PTZ cameras to various architectural structures.
  • Rack Building: Assemble, wire, and dress equipment racks cleanly, ensuring optimized thermal management, clean signal separation (separating high-voltage from low-voltage lines), and logical cable management.
  • Termination: Expertly terminate RJ45 (including shielded EtherCON), captive screw blocks (Phoenix connectors), XLR, BNC, and compression HDMI connections.

Testing, Configuration & Commissioning

  • Signal Flow Verification: Read and interpret AV architectural blueprints, line drawings, and schematic diagrams to verify end-to-end signal flow.
  • Control & DSP Loading: Load pre-written code and configuration files into control systems (Crestron, Extron, Q-SYS, AMX) and audio DSPs (Biamp, Q-SYS, BSS).
  • Troubleshooting: Diagnose and resolve complex audio, video, and control system issues (e.g., EDID handshake failures, ground loops, network discovery bugs, or acoustic feedback).
  • Network Setup: Configure basic IP settings on AV-over-IP endpoints, control processors, and managed network switches.

Leadership, Safety & Project Closeout

  • Site Leadership (Sr. Techs): Direct and mentor junior technicians and apprentices on proper installation techniques and company standards.
  • Project Documentation: Complete and submit Field Service Reports (FSRs), daily logbooks, redlined schematics, and accurate timecards with phase codes by Monday at 10:00 AM.
  • Client Handoff: Assist the Project Manager and Systems Engineers with final commissioning, client demonstrations, and system sign-off.
  • Safety Compliance: Maintain a strict standard of site safety, utilizing PPE and proper power tool/ladder safety protocols at all times.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge & Experience

  • Installer: 1–2 years of experience in commercial construction, electrical, or structured cabling. Basic hand tool proficiency required.
  • System Technician: 3+ years of dedicated commercial AV integration experience. Strong understanding of analog and digital signal flow, aspect ratios, and Ohm's law.
  • Senior System Technician: 5+ years of commercial AV lead experience managing large-scale integration projects (e.g., corporate boardrooms, high-end educational facilities, or spaces utilizing large LED video walls).

Skills & Abilities

  • Proficient in using AV testing equipment (e.g., network cable testers, digital multimeters, and EDID emulators).
  • Ability to work comfortably off laptops to upload firmware, edit configuration profiles, and modify basic network parameters.
  • Excellent communication skills for interfacing directly with corporate clients, general contractors, and IT managers.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Physical Effort: Must be able to see, hear, and speak clearly. Manual dexterity is required for fine-wire terminations. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs unassisted, work comfortably on ladders, scaffolding, and scissor lifts, and spend extended periods standing or crouching.
  • Environment: Daily work takes place on active commercial construction sites as well as finished, corporate corporate environments. Conditions vary and frequently mirror typical construction hazards (dust, noise, active trades).

Security Clearance:

  • Secret Clearance an Asset.
  • The ability to recieve Secret Clearance (required 5 years in Canada and Permenant Residency.
