Opportunity

Do you have the focus and quick thinking to spot what others might miss? As a Sonar Operator in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF), you’ll operate advanced acoustic systems to help support critical tactical decisions at sea.

This position is available full-time.

Overview

As a Sonar Operator, your primary duties include:

  • Operate all active and passive sonars, sonar simulators, communication equipment, bathythermograph equipment, sonobuoys and data transmission systems
  • Assist in the development of command decisions by compiling and analyzing sonar and intelligence data
  • Gather, evaluate and identify the significant features of oceanographic data
  • Convert analyzed oceanographic and acoustic data into comprehensive reports
  • Maintain status boards, charts and watchkeeping records, as well as geographical, operational and tactical plots

To be eligible to apply to the CAF, you must:

  • Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident living in Canada;
  • Be at least 18 years old (17 years old with parental consent), except:
  • For the Paid Education programs, you may be 16 years old (with parental consent);
  • For the Primary Reserve, you may be 16 years old (with parental consent) and must be enrolled as a full-time student;
  • Have completed at least Grade 10 or Secondary IV in Québec (some jobs need higher levels of education).

Required Education

The minimum required education to apply for this occupation is the completion of the provincial requirements for Grade 10 or Secondary 4 in Quebec.

Foreign education may be accepted.
