Full job description

Sales Manager — Solar & Renewables | Own the Number, Build the Team

Shield Solar · Calgary, AB (with travel across our service territory) Full-time, permanent · Base $70,000–$90,000 + commission + profit sharing · On-target earnings $110,000–$130,000

The short version

We're a Medium sized solar installation company doing residential and commercial work across Alberta, and we're growing faster than our sales engine. We need someone to run it — not from behind a dashboard, but as a player-coach who closes our biggest commercial deals personally while building a team of four into something formidable.

If you want a sales management job where you inherit a mature process and manage from a spreadsheet, this isn't it. If you want to build the process, carry a bag on the deals that matter, and have your fingerprints on every part of how this company grows — keep reading.

Why this role is different

You get real authority. Discount authority to a defined margin floor. Final say on which channels get a budget. The power to walk away from bad deals. Bid/no-bid decisions on public tenders. We put decision rights in writing, and yours are substantial.

You sell, too. Roughly 40% of your time is personal selling on our largest commercial, agricultural, and public-sector opportunities — including work with municipalities and Indigenous economic development corporations. The other 60% is coaching your team, building channels, and running the pipeline. You'll never be asked to manage something you don't do yourself.

The market is on our side. Alberta has the most permissive micro-generation rules in Canada, the fastest solar payback in the country, a federal tax credit driving commercial demand, and a public sector actively tendering renewable work. You're not pushing a rock uphill. You're deciding which of several open doors to walk through first.

Your team is small enough to actually develop. Two residential consultants, one commercial account executive, one inside sales & marketing coordinator. Four people. You'll know their pipelines cold, ride along twice a month with each of them, and watch them get measurably better because of you.

What you'll own

  • The bookings number — residential and commercial — and the margin quality behind it
  • A personal quota on our top commercial accounts and public-sector pursuits
  • Weekly pipeline reviews, monthly forecasts, and a coverage ratio the operations team can build against
  • The price book, the proposal standard, and the margin floor
  • Our outbound commercial prospecting program and referral partner network (electricians, GCs, roofers, ag dealers)
  • The CRM as a single source of truth — data discipline included
  • The handoff to design and operations, so what we sell is what we can build

What we're looking for

  • 5+ years selling solar, HVAC, roofing, or another considered purchase — in-home or B2B — with 2+ years leading a team
  • Fluency in the financial side: payback, IRR, and how a customer's retailer and rate structure change the math
  • A track record of building repeatable process, not just personal heroics
  • The spine to hold a margin floor when both the customer and your own rep are pushing you to fold
  • Valid Alberta driver's licence
  • NABCEP PV Technical Sales certification is a nice-to-have, not a requirement — we'll support you in getting it

What you get

  • Base $70,000–$90,000 + commission + profit sharing · On-target earnings $110,000–$130,000
  • Vehicle allowance and phone
  • Paid training and certification support (NABCEP, industry courses)
  • A seat at the leadership table — you'll work directly with the owner, design lead, and operations manager
  • The chance to shape how a growing company sells, before the concrete sets

Who we are

Shield Solar is built on a foundation few Alberta solar companies can claim: more than 20 years of hands-on building science experience through our parent company, Shield Restorations Inc., operating as Shield Roofing & Exteriors. What started as a roofing and exterior restoration business has grown into a full-service Alberta home performance partner and solar is the natural extension of everything we've already been doing.

Most solar companies see a roof as a mounting surface. We see it as a system one we've designed, built, replaced, and inspected thousands of times across Alberta's harshest climate

  • Flexible schedule
