JOB SUMMARY

The Eviction Prevention Worker plays a key role in promoting housing stability for tenants at Thrive Housing and Support. Using a people-centred, proactive, and collaborative approach, the worker identifies tenants at risk of eviction, intervenes early, and coordinates supports that sustain successful tenancies. This position aligns with best practices endorsed by the City of Peterborough and incorporates principles from the Office of the Commissioner of Housing Equity (OCHE).

RESPONSIBILITIES and DUTIES

  • Monitor and identify tenants who may be at risk of eviction due to arrears, health, or social challenges.
  • Conduct outreach, assessments, and home visits to understand tenant needs and barriers.
  • Develop individualized eviction prevention plans with clear goals and follow-up steps.
  • Training or assisting the person with disabilities to teach another individual and /or family members to carry out or assist with any of the above activities.
  • Approach all interactions with empathy, respect, and encouragement.
  • Build trust and rapport with tenants, using positive and inclusive communication.
  • Support tenants in understanding their rights, responsibilities, and available supports.
  • Offer flexible options for meeting times and service delivery to reduce barriers to engagement.
  • Liaise with landlords, property management, and community partners to resolve tenancy issues collaboratively.
  • Facilitate referrals to internal and external resources, including mental health, employment, financial, and legal supports.
  • Work closely with families, caregivers, and natural supports when appropriate.
  • Assist tenants in accessing emergency funds, benefits, and rent supports.
  • Support tenants in developing budgeting and financial literacy skills.
  • Negotiate and monitor repayment plans for rent arrears and ensure accountability and fairness.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential case notes and documentation in tenant files.
  • Track progress and outcomes using established performance indicators.
  • Participate in regular supervision and team meetings to review cases and share best practices.
  • Ensure compliance with the Residential Tenancies Act, Housing Services Act, and Thrive’s internal policies.
  • Apply OCHE principles and an anti-oppressive, trauma-informed lens in all activities.
  • Promote continuous improvement in eviction prevention practices and contribute to policy development.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Diploma or degree in Social Work, Human Services, or a related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in housing stability, case management, or tenant support services.
  • Knowledge of the Residential Tenancies Act and eviction prevention frameworks (OCHE or equivalent).
  • Strong communication, conflict resolution, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in documentation, data entry, and use of housing management systems (e.g., Yardi).
  • Valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation.
