Trader Trainee

Vancouver, BC (Downtown) | In-Office | 6:00 AM Start, Mon–Fri

About Vantage

Vantage Commodities is a trader-led lumber firm based in Vancouver. We're a small, focused team that values sharp execution and clear thinking. No corporate bloat—just people who know the business and move quickly.

The Role

This is a ground-floor opportunity to learn lumber trading from the inside. You'll start by cold calling trucking carriers—building our logistics network, learning shipping lanes, and getting a feel for how pricing and supply chains actually work. Once you've got that foundation, you'll move into trading: calling customers, developing your own book of business, and eventually managing your own portfolio. If you're someone who's energized by sales, comfortable with rejection, and motivated by uncapped earning potential, this is how you break into the industry.

What You'll Do

  • Cold call trucking carriers to source freight rates, build relationships, and coordinate shipments
  • Learn lumber logistics, pricing, and market dynamics through hands-on carrier work
  • Transition to cold calling customers—mills, wholesalers, distributors—to generate new business
  • Build and manage your own client book through outreach, follow-up, and relationship development
  • Negotiate transactions, close sales, and manage your trading portfolio
  • Support senior traders with research and daily trading activity while building your own pipeline
  • Help coordinate inventory, shipments, and logistics to keep things running smoothly

What We're Looking For

  • Sales-driven mindset—you actually want to be on the phone
  • Comfortable with cold calling and rejection; persistent and resilient
  • Strong communication and negotiation skills
  • Analytical enough to understand pricing, margins, and market trends
  • Proficient in Excel and comfortable learning new systems
  • Degree in Business, Finance, Economics, or similar is a plus but not required

What You Get

  • Competitive base/draw during training
  • Commission structure as you build your book—uncapped earning potential
  • Mentorship from experienced traders
  • Clear progression from logistics to full trading responsibilities
  • Real ownership of your results and income growth

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: From $60,000.00 per year

Benefits:

  • Dental care
  • Extended health care
  • On-site gym
  • RRSP match

Work Location: In person
