Settlement Workers assist immigrants, refugees and other eligible clients with immediate needs for settling in Canada or with ongoing integration into Canadian Society. The primary focus of settlement workers in schools is to facilitate integration and settlement of newcomer families through systematic outreach to newly arrived families, to provide them with the information about available services, needs assessment, cross-cultural education and referral.
The Settlement Worker will report to the ESL Coordinator and be under the supervision of the Director of Instruction. Experience with employment-related settlement services would be considered an asset.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conducts systematic needs assessment for newcomer children and families.
- Documentation and tracking of regular client contacts.
- Liaises with parents, students, schools and community agencies.
- Facilitates communication between school staff and newcomer families.
- Facilitates referrals to community services and resources.
- Advocates on behalf of student and family.
- Maintains records and statistical information while ensuring confidentiality of client information.
- Provides assistance to parents to ensure a positive acculturation for the children.
- Provides information to schools about ways to support settlement issues.
- Organizes and/or facilitates settlement-related events and workshops for schools.
- Assists schools with establishing and maintaining contact with ‘hard to reach’ families.
- Encourages parent participation in education.
- Attends all required professional development and in-service activities as provided.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Grade 12 graduation, plus two years post secondary education in Social Sciences, Social Work or Counselling or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Two years experience working in a multicultural setting with different ethnic groups. Experience working with refugees is an asset.
- Oral and written fluency in both English and Arabic.
- Working knowledge of immigration policies and settlement needs to facilitate transition and integration into school environment.
- Working knowledge of existing community agencies and resources.
- Ability to communicate effectively using tact, diplomacy and persuasion in frequent contacts of a difficult, specialized or sensitive nature.
- Ability to interpret, analyze, and use judgement in the application and modification of methods and procedures.
- Ability to work with both children and adults in a collaborative and facilitative manner.
- Working knowledge of computers.
- Valid BC Driver’s license preferable.
