Full job description

Job Title: Settlement Worker in Schools (SWIS)

Language Requirement: required (English + Vietnamese)

Hours: 35 hours/week

Compensation: $32.80 per hour

Posting Type: Existing Vacancy// Fixed-Term Contract

Start Date: As soon as possible – fixed-term contract ending March 31, 2027, subject to the terms of the employment agreement.

About Newcomer Centre of Peel

Newcomer Centre of Peel (NCP) is a nonprofit, charitable, multi-service agency that assists the entire newcomer family in achieving settlement and integration. With experience and expertise in English language training, employability, and comprehensive settlement services — including programs for women, children, youth, and seniors — NCP offers a dedication to service quality. Through innovation and a progressive attitude, we leverage the broad experience of our staff and community partners to overcome settlement barriers.

Duties & Responsibilities

1. Conduct outreach to newcomer families and youth to provide settlement services in schools.

2. Conduct needs assessments to identify immediate, intermediate, and long-term settlement needs.

3. Provide newcomer families and youth with settlement information and referrals to community services and educational resources based on their specific needs.

4. Facilitate information and orientation sessions to help newcomer families understand the school system, Canadian society, culture, laws, and other aspects of life in Canada.

5. Support newcomer families in navigating the Ontario education system, including school policies, procedures, and programs, and encourage active participation in school and community life.

6. Provide information to school staff regarding the cultural sensitivities and unique needs of newcomer families.

7. Maintain up-to-date client and service records, ensuring accuracy and confidentiality of client information.

8. Submit statistical and service reports to the SWIS Program Manager as required.

9. Stay current with changes in policies, legislation, and community resources affecting newcomers.

10. Participate in professional development activities, workshops, conferences, and training sessions to support continuous learning and program excellence.

11. Attend meetings as required.

12. Carry out other duties as determined by the SWIS Program Manager.

Qualifications & Requirements

13. Post-secondary education in social work, psychology, settlement, or a related field.

14. Minimum one year of experience assisting newcomers with settlement issues.

15. Extensive knowledge of the immigration system, Ontario school system, and community resources.

16. Current knowledge of legislation, policies, and practices affecting newcomers.

17. Strong workshop facilitation, presentation, and public speaking skills.

18. Demonstrated cross-cultural communication skills with intercultural sensitivity when working with newcomer youth, parents, and school staff.

19. Knowledge of issues related to immigrant and refugee communities.

20. Strong organizational and self-management skills.

21. Ability to multi-task while maintaining a high degree of accuracy in case management and data collection.

22. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team.

23. Proficiency in computer applications and social media platforms.

24. Valid Ontario driver’s licence and access to a reliable vehicle.

25. Must be proficient in English and Vietnamese.
