Position Summary:

The role of the Clinical Supervisor - Nursing Programs, is to provide students with appropriate learning experiences in a clinical setting. It requires the use of critical thinking skills and accurate judgment within an environment that is physically and intellectually demanding in addition to assisting students in these programs to meet the course learning outcomes in their clinical experiences.

Responsibilities:


  • Provides students with appropriate learning experiences.
  • Selects clients for student care.
  • Reviews and clarifies the nursing practice course expectations.
  • Maintains an effective and harmonious relationship with members of the health care team, the students, clients and their families, and medical staff. Supervises and
  • monitors ongoing client care provided by students.
  • Utilizes set educational guidelines, policies, and procedures of the clinical agency and educational institution, and guidelines for professional standards.
  • Prepares to intervene when the client’s condition suddenly changes and the student is unprepared to handle the situation, the student is not at the required level to
  • deal with a complex medical crisis, or when the student acts in an unsafe manner.
  • Makes changes to clinical assignments and organizational plans to accommodate unanticipated events (e.g., client’s surgery time moved ahead one hour with only 15 minutes notice, IV pump alarm requires immediate “troubleshooting”, etc.).
  • Works collaboratively with faculty and other clinical supervisors to determine and implement an effective learning environment.
  • Assesses students’ performance.
  • Adheres to the learning outcome criteria and uses established forms and evaluation tools as written and prepared by the course professor.
  • Makes accurate assessments and judgments regarding students’ ability to perform the steps of the nursing process as taught in nursing theory classes.
  • Records observations on student clinical performance and shares the written notes with students; provides verbal clarification if necessary.
  • Seeks input from clinical agency nursing staff, especially when there is an incident or area of concern regarding a student’s performance.
  • Determines if students’ clinical performance has met the course learning outcomes in relevant Practical Nursing or BScN courses, in consultation with the clinical coordinator/professor.

Qualifications:
Education

  • A completed four (4) year degree in Nursing or, Two (2) year diploma in Nursing is required. Must be a Registered Nurse in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Must have current Basic Cardiac Life Support certification.
  • Annual TB testing
  • COVID-19 vaccination (2 doses for hospitals, 3 doses for LTC placements)
  • N95 mask fit testing
  • Current BLS certification


Experience

  • Minimum two (2) years of recent practical experience in Nursing with a minimum of two (2) years of experience in an acute care setting.


Skills

  • Demonstrated ability to exercise good judgment, to communicate with tact/diplomacy with external clinical agencies, students, staff and faculty.
  • Proficient in Windows, Microsoft Office, Email, online Calendar system, and Blackboard.
  • Excellent time management, organizational, and multi-tasking skills.
  • Ability to work well under pressure.
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills are essential.
  • Demonstrated analysis and problem-solving skills.
  • A valid G-class Ontario driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle are required for travel.
  • Well-developed human relations and communication skills (verbal and written) to interact effectively with staff and the public are required.

A skills assessment test will be administered during the recruitment process. A combination of relevant experience and education may be considered.

The compensation step will be determined based on receiving and verifying relevant formal education through official transcripts and relevant work experience, in accordance with the salary placement calculation process.
