POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of a teacher and as a member of the student’s learning team, the Educational Assistant will provide assistance in the education and support of students.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • In a program structured by the teacher, the Educational Assistant will work with students in small groups or on an individual basis and oversee the work of a class while the teacher works with small groups or individuals as necessary.
  • Assist in remedial work, reinforcement or practice of skills, or the preparation of individual or small group projects.
  • Assist in the maintenance of records and files.
  • Assist teachers in the preparation of, and circulating curriculum materials, assignments, and tests such as typing, drawing or creating diagrams, duplicating and collating materials.
  • Assist in marking exams or worksheets.
  • Assist in the operation of audio-visual equipment and assessing technology.
  • Remains alert to all situations that may represent a risk to students, and deals with minor issues with students as required.
  • Supervises the loading and unloading of students onto buses as assigned.
  • Assist in organizing and supervising field trips and other off-campus activities.
  • Assist in classroom management activities, such as the preparation of paints, setting up or clean-up of rooms and tables, preparation of displays, bulletin boards, etc.
  • Assist in contacting parents of ill or injured students as appropriate.
  • Assist with the sign out, or oversee the distribution of equipment, materials or games.
  • Maintain confidentiality, and a patient, supportive and enthusiastic commitment to students.
  • Performs other related responsibilities as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

  • Desired Education and Experience:
  • High School Diploma or GED is required.
  • Post secondary Education Assistant certificate or working toward achieving certificate.
  • Standard First Aid and CPR certification preferred.
  • Six (6) months experience working with students in a group setting.
  • Personal Attributes:

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with members of the staff, and students.
  • Conflict resolution skills.
  • Organization, time management, and multitasking
  • Communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Problem solving.
  • Proficient in computers.
  • Commitment to lifelong learning and professional development.
  • General Employment Requirements:
  • Valid Driver’s License, and Reliable transportation.
  • Criminal Record Check, and Vulnerable Sector Check.
  • Oath of Confidentiality.
