Orientation and Mobility Specialist
PART-TIME POSITION (6 hours a day, 2 days a week)
The Orientation and Mobility Specialist develops and provides orientation and mobility services to students with visual impairment. The Orientation and Mobility Specialist works closely with students, families and school staff to develop and implement individualized orientation and mobility plans to help students navigate their environment safely and independently.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conducts assessments to determine the orientation and mobility needs of students with visual impairment.
- Develops individual orientation and mobility plans.
- Provides direct instructions to students on orientation and mobility skills, including concept development, sensory development, orientation and mapping, travel techniques, and communication, safety and advocacy.
- Collaborates with the vision teams, classroom teachers, and other school staff to ensure that students have access to their environments.
- Maintains accurate records of student progress.
- Stays up to date on best practices and new developments in the field of orientation and mobility.
- Utilizes a wide range of equipment including adaptive technology.
- Assists with the supervision of the general student population; supervises assigned students in and out of the classroom and in the community.
Qualifications:
- Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent.
- Completion of Orientation and Mobility program plus two years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of training and / or experience.
- Valid BC Driver's License.
- Demonstrated understanding of visual impairments and the social, emotional and educational implications of vision loss.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a full range of students with special needs.
- Demonstrated ability to manage behaviour appropriately.
- Working knowledge of adaptive technology related to work performed including computers, low vision aids, wheelchairs, and medical equipment.
- Demonstrated ability to work at the level of independence and with the degree of initiative appropriate to the position.
- Ability to communicate effectively.
- Physical ability to perform the duties and responsibilities of this job.
