Job Title: Outside Sales Specialist

Location: Preston Hardware, Ottawa, Ontario
Employment Type: Full-Time, Permanent
Compensation: Base Salary plus Commission

As we continue to grow, we are looking for a motivated and customer-focused Outside Sales Specialist to help expand our presence in the commercial, contractor, and residential markets.

Position Summary

The Outside Sales Specialist will be responsible for developing new business opportunities and managing client relationships outside of the store. This role focuses on building strong relationships with contractors, builders, property managers, designers, institutions, and commercial clients.

The successful candidate will identify customer needs, recommend appropriate products and solutions, and support clients with a wide range of hardware, tools, building materials, paint, plumbing, electrical, seasonal, and related product categories. This is a field-based, customer-facing role ideal for someone who is self-motivated, sales-driven, and passionate about providing excellent service.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with contractors, builders, property managers, designers, businesses, and residential customers
  • Identify and pursue new sales opportunities in commercial, contractor, and residential markets
  • Grow and manage a portfolio of new and existing clients
  • Visit job sites, customer locations, and businesses to assess needs and provide product solutions
  • Recommend suitable hardware and building supply products based on customer needs.
  • Meet or exceed monthly and quarterly sales targets
  • Prepare quotes, follow up with customers, and support the sales process from start to finish
  • Negotiate pricing, terms, and product solutions while maintaining profitability
  • Work closely with in-store teams to ensure accurate product availability, order fulfillment, and consistent customer service
  • Respond promptly and professionally to customer questions, concerns, and requests
  • Monitor market trends, competitor activity, customer needs, and new product opportunities
  • Prepare regular sales reports and provide updates to management
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of Preston Hardware’s products, services, promotions, and industry best practices

Qualifications

  • 5 years of experience in outside sales, account management, contractor sales, retail sales, or a related field
  • Experience in sales within the hardware or building supplies industry is an asset.
  • Strong communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills
  • Self-motivated, goal-oriented, and comfortable working independently
  • Strong customer service mindset with the ability to understand customer needs and recommend practical solutions
  • Ability to manage multiple clients, priorities, and follow-ups efficiently
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle
  • Diploma or degree in Business, Sales, Marketing, or a related field is considered an asset
