Full job description
Calgary Ocular Prosthetics is looking for a detail-oriented Lab Assistant to work alongside our ocularists in the fabrication of custom ocular prostheses.
This is a hands-on artistic fabrication position, not a research or chemistry laboratory role. The ideal candidate will have strong artistic ability, excellent fine-motor skills, and experience creating or finishing detailed three-dimensional forms.
We are especially interested in candidates with backgrounds in fine art, sculpture, dental technology, denture fabrication, dental laboratory work, prosthetics, or model making.
Ocular prosthetics experience is not required. Comprehensive in-house training is provided.
Responsibilities
- Assist with fabrication of custom ocular prostheses.
- Prepare and work with moulds, impressions, casts, and prosthetic materials.
- Assist with shaping, trimming, polishing, and finishing.
- Use hand tools and specialized equipment with precision.
- Maintain a clean, organized workspace.
- Follow detailed fabrication and safety procedures.
Qualifications
- Fine Arts degree or diploma required.
- Strong skills in painting and sculpture.
- Excellent understanding of colour, shape, proportion, and symmetry.
- Excellent hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills.
- Patient, precise, and comfortable with detailed hands-on work.
- Able to follow detailed instructions and work independently.
Experience That Is an Asset
Experience in any of the following is highly relevant:
- Denture or dental technician
- Dental laboratory
- Dental prosthetics
- Mould or impression making
- Sculpture or figurative art
- Hyperrealism or realistic painting
- Prosthetic fabrication
- Model making
Experience with realism, hyperrealism, oil, and acrylic painting is strongly preferred.
Portfolio Required
Please submit a portfolio containing at least 10 images demonstrating advanced painting and/or sculpture skills.
At least 2 pieces must include proof of authorship, such as work-in-progress photographs, time-lapse video, or photographs showing you creating the work.
