MEDICAL LABORATORY ASSISTANT – CLINICAL TRIALS

The Role

Position Summary:

The Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) will support clinical trial operations by performing phlebotomy, ECGs, specimen processing, hematology slide preparation, and packaging of biological samples in accordance with study protocols and Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines. The MLA will ensure all laboratory activities are completed accurately, efficiently, and in compliance with sponsor, regulatory, and institutional requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform venipuncture and blood draws on adult and pediatric clinical trial participants per protocol requirements.
  • Perform electrocardiograms (ECGs).
  • Label and document specimens accurately using subject identifiers and visit details.
  • Ensure participant comfort and safety during collection procedures.
  • Centrifuge, aliquot, and process samples (e.g., serum, plasma, whole blood, urine) according to study-specific instructions.
  • Prepare hematology (blood smear) slides when required by study protocol or site SOPs.
  • Maintain integrity of samples by following temperature and handling requirements.
  • Document processing times, deviations, and sample conditions as required.
  • Prepare shipment of biological specimens to central or sponsor-designated laboratories in accordance with IATA and Health Canada transport regulations.
  • Maintain specimen shipping logs and chain-of-custody documentation.
  • Adhere to GCP, SOPs, and biosafety standards.
  • Maintain accurate and complete lab records and logs.
  • Participate in internal audits, monitoring visits, and staff training related to lab procedures.
  • Maintain inventory of lab supplies, kits, and shipping materials.
  • Support study start-up and close-out activities involving laboratory components.
  • Qualifications:
  • Medical Laboratory Assistant certification or equivalent education.
  • Phlebotomy certification and recent adult and pediatric venipuncture experience required.
  • Experience performing ECGs.
  • Experience in clinical research or handling research specimens an asset.
  • Strong attention to detail, documentation accuracy, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.

Working Conditions:

  • Clinical and laboratory environment.
  • Occasional requirement for flexible hours based on study visit schedules or shipment timelines.
  • Exposure to biohazard materials with adherence to all safety protocols.

Background Check:

A clear Criminal Background check, inclusive of a vulnerable sector search, is required to start. If you have resided outside of the city of Calgary in the past 12 months, you will need to contact the local police or RCMP detachment in your previous residential municipality to be able to obtain a full report.

Pay: $26.00-$28.00 per hour

Expected hours: 40.0 per week
