This position has a term length of 1 year plus 1 day.
Location - This role is hybrid with a mix of remote and in-person work at North Campus Edmonton.
The Research Initiatives Coordinator will be responsible for the design and implementation of observational and experimental studies within the Department of Emergency Medicine (DEM) at the University of Alberta and to provide support for research and scholarly activities of the Emergency Medicine residents. The Research Initiatives will support the Departmental Research Director in teaching research related curriculum to the residents as well as coordinating other faculty contributing to research teaching while acting as the primary contact for methodological and statistical support for resident research projects.
The incumbent will provide advanced skills and knowledge for project management and coordination of logistics associated with the development of collaborative research initiatives. The Research Initiatives Coordinator will develop a communication strategy to engage team members and manage the overall milestones and study targets to ensure completion of the projects.
The Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry is one of the world’s top academic health science centres. With 21 departments, multiple research institutes and centres, and a focus on excellence in education, research, and clinical care, the faculty trains outstanding medical and dental professionals and drives global health innovation in collaboration with partners across sectors.- Maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) for research;
- Conduct thorough literature searches;
- Design and revise data collection forms;
- Assist with retrospective medical record reviews and systematic reviews;
- Assist in the analysis and interpretation of study results using standard biostatistical software;
- Write sections of manuscripts for publication;
- Write epidemiological analysis and interpretation of study results;
- Lead on applying for and maintaining research ethics, operational and administrative approval for projects run through the Department;
- Obtain and catalogue all Alberta Health Services (AHS) data sharing agreements for each research studies;
- Develop a program of training for bioinformatics for the DEM including NetCare, RedCAP, and EDIS;
- Develop a universal and accepted approach and monitoring for data entry, database storage and encryption (using RedCAP);
- Forecast and plan approaches/strategies to complete the research study milestones and timelines;
- Provide direction, support and mentorship to junior colleagues/clinical faculty/residents in research design, implementation, analysis and dissemination as well as guide through the ethics approval process;
- Support applications for competitive research funding from national and/or provincial funding bodies through development and coordination of application documents;
- Teach research methods to undergraduate students, residents and graduate students;
- Foster and maintain relationships with project collaborators internal and external to the University;
- Minimum of Master’s Degree in a relevant discipline (Biostatistics, Health Research Methodology, Epidemiology) with a minimum 3 years previous research experience;
- Research experience in the healthcare setting and emergency medicine is strongly preferred;
- Excellent research, analytical and writing skills demonstrated by substantive contributions to publications in peer reviewed journal articles and/or presentations at academic conferences;
- Knowledge and experience of health research methodology in the area of administrative data analysis, clinical trials, surveys, evidence synthesis, and/or qualitative research;
- Understanding of synthesis research including experience with systematic reviewing, quality appraisal, and analysis of literature for the purpose of knowledge synthesis;
- Demonstrated skills in literature searches, preparation and presentation of research data and findings;
- Knowledge and experience with statistical methodology and statistical software (i.e. SAS, SPSS, STATA, etc.);
- Proficient in the use of web-based functionality, word-processing, presentation (i.e.: Microsoft Excel, Power Point);
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and as a member of a team collaborating with a multi-disciplinary research team, clinical experts and departmental administrative staff.
- Knowledge of the University of Alberta policies and procedures pertaining to Research,
- Excellent interpersonal skills, implementation skills and results driven orientation;
- Demonstrated strong organizational, communication and time management skills
