Full job description

Famcare Medical Clinic — Silvergate Medical Group

Famcare Medical Clinic is a growing family practice and walk-in clinic in Etobicoke, led by Dr Kaye. We are launching a dedicated IV iron infusion clinic for patients with iron deficiency and iron deficiency anaemia who have not responded to, or cannot tolerate, oral iron — including patients referred from our own family practice, our women's health service, and local referring physicians.

This is a new service, starting with 2 infusion chairs and 1–2 clinic days per week, so you will help shape how it runs from day one.

THE ROLE

You will be the dedicated infusion nurse for the clinic. Working under a written medical directive, and with a physician on site at all times during infusion hours, you will:

  • Review the infusion order/referral before the appointment: confirm product and dose (primarily ferric carboxymaltose/Ferinject or ferric derisomaltose/Monoferric, single-visit doses up to 1,000 mg), recent labs (CBC, ferritin, iron studies/TSAT), weight, allergies, pregnancy status where relevant, and prior infusion reactions — and flag anything missing or concerning to the physician before the patient is seated
  • Welcome the patient, confirm clinical and financial consent has been completed, take and document baseline vitals (BP, pulse, temperature, SpO2, weight)
  • Perform IV cannulation to a high first-attempt standard, check patency, and manage the infusion site throughout — extravasation of IV iron can cause lasting skin staining, so site vigilance is essential
  • Prepare and administer IV iron exactly as ordered under the medical directive, documenting drug, dose, lot number, expiry, start/stop times, and infusion rate
  • Monitor the patient during the infusion and for at least 30 minutes afterwards, with repeat vitals before discharge, and give clear aftercare instructions
  • Recognise and respond immediately to hypersensitivity/anaphylaxis: stop the infusion, call for the physician and 911, give IM epinephrine as directed by protocol, position, oxygen, and IV fluids — you must be confident doing this without hesitation
  • Check the emergency/anaphylaxis kit as scheduled, keep the infusion area stocked and clean between patients, and follow infection prevention and control practices
  • Document every infusion completely and accurately in the EMR on the day, and hand over any reaction, concern, or incomplete item directly to the physician
  • Help with clinic set-up in the early weeks: stock lists, kit checks, mock emergency drills, and refining the patient flow alongside our existing nursing and front-desk team

Patients are often tired, anaemic, and anxious about needles. We need a nurse who is clinically sharp and warm — someone who explains what is happening, puts people at ease, and treats every patient with patience and dignity.

MUST-HAVES — please do not apply without these:

  • Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) — no restrictions that would prevent IV therapy
  • Demonstrated IV therapy competence: recent, hands-on IV cannulation experience and IV medication administration (please describe where and how recently in your application)
  • Training/competence in recognising and managing anaphylaxis and hypersensitivity reactions
  • Current BLS/CPR (HCP level) — or willing to renew before start date
  • Comfortable working under a written medical directive, and willing to sign off on the clinic's directive and emergency protocol
  • Reliable, punctual, and available for fixed weekday shifts — our patients book weeks ahead and a missed shift cancels a full clinic day
  • Clear, kind communication with patients and a calm, team-first manner

NICE-TO-HAVES:

  • Experience in an infusion clinic, outpatient/ambulatory clinic, day medicine, oncology infusion, emergency department, or hospital medical unit
  • Experience with IV iron specifically (Ferinject, Monoferric, or Venofer)
  • Experience with Juno EMR — or OSCAR/Accuro and a willingness to learn Juno quickly
  • Phlebotomy experience

WHAT WE OFFER:

  • A focused, single-service clinic — no ward chaos, no nights, predictable day shifts
  • A physician on site for every infusion session
  • A small, friendly team and a new service you can help build properly from day one
  • Opportunity to increase days as referrals grow

HOW TO APPLY:

Apply through Indeed with your resume and a brief cover note answering the screening questions below. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an interview and asked to bring: CNO registration confirmation, BLS/CPR certificate, and any IV therapy/infusion training certificates.

We thank all applicants; only those selected for interview will be contacted.

Famcare Medical Clinic is committed to a respectful, inclusive workplace. Accommodations are available on request during recruitment.

Pay: $28.04-$40.00 per hour

Application question(s):

  • How many years of hands-on IV cannulation experience do you have, and in what setting (hospital, infusion clinic, community, other)? When did you last start IVs regularly?
  • Have you administered IV iron (Ferinject, Monoferric, or Venofer) before? Please answer with one of: Yes / No, but I have administered other IV medications / No IV medication experience.
  • Describe a time you recognised a patient reacting to a medication or deteriorating. What did you do first?
  • Are you available for 1–2 fixed weekdays per week in Etobicoke (day shifts), on an ongoing basis? Which days?
  • How far do you live from 5 Lavington Drive, Etobicoke, and how would you commute?
  • Do you have experience with Juno, OSCAR, or Accuro EMR? Which ones?

Licence/Certification:

  • RPN registration in good standing with CNO (required)
  • BLS/CPR at healthcare provider (HCP) level (required)

Work Location: In person
