Full job description

Love Math? Help Students Learn to Love It Too.

Sylvan Learning Centre is looking for enthusiastic Math Teachers and Tutors to join our team in Rosedale, Toronto.

This is a great opportunity for teachers, university students, aspiring educators and experienced tutors who enjoy working with young people and want rewarding, hands-on teaching experience.

You'll work directly with students in a supportive, structured environment using Sylvan's established programs and learning materials. No need to create an entire curriculum or spend hours developing lesson plans from scratch.

Instead, you can focus on what matters most: teaching, encouraging students and helping them succeed.

What You'll Do

You'll work with students individually and in small groups, helping them strengthen their math skills, overcome challenges and build confidence.

Depending on your knowledge and experience, you may:

  • Teach elementary and/or secondary mathematics
  • Help students strengthen foundational numeracy and problem-solving skills
  • Support concepts such as arithmetic, fractions, decimals, percentages and equations
  • Teach intermediate and advanced topics such as algebra, geometry, functions, trigonometry and pre-calculus
  • Review Sylvan learning plans and materials before instructional sessions
  • Adapt your explanations to different students and learning styles
  • Provide encouragement and constructive feedback
  • Monitor and record student progress
  • Communicate student needs and observations to Centre staff
  • Collaborate with the Sylvan team on student learning strategies
  • Participate in training and professional development
  • Complete Sylvan certification training for the programs you teach

You do not need to be an expert in every Grade 1 - 12 math topic to apply. We encourage candidates with strong math skills in particular grade levels or subject areas to apply.

Who We're Looking For

You may be a great fit if you:

  • Have strong mathematics skills
  • Enjoy explaining concepts and helping others learn
  • Communicate clearly and patiently
  • Can adapt your teaching approach to different students
  • Are dependable, organized and comfortable working as part of a team
  • Bring an encouraging, positive attitude to the classroom

Education

Currently pursuing or having completed a bachelor's degree, diploma or equivalent post-secondary education in Mathematics, Education, Engineering, Science, Business, Computer Science or another relevant field is preferred.

Great Assets, Not Requirements

The following are welcome but not required:

  • Previous tutoring, teaching, mentoring or coaching experience
  • Familiarity with the Ontario mathematics curriculum
  • Experience working with children or teenagers
  • Ontario Certified Teacher (OCT) designation or other teaching credentials
  • Experience teaching senior-level mathematics

Don't check every box? We still encourage you to apply. If you're strong in math, communicate well and genuinely enjoy helping students learn, we'd like to hear from you.

Why Teach at Sylvan?

Focus on teaching.
Sylvan provides established programs, materials and training, reducing the amount of lesson preparation required compared with independent tutoring.

Flexible part-time work.
Build valuable teaching experience while balancing school, another position or other commitments.

Teach in small groups.
Work closely with students and provide meaningful individual attention.

See the impact you're making.
Help students move from frustration and uncertainty toward greater skill, confidence and independence.

Develop as an educator.
Build practical experience in instruction, communication, student engagement and differentiated learning.

Work with a supportive team.
You'll have Centre staff and established learning programs behind you rather than having to manage everything independently.

Enjoy a unique workplace.
Teach from our beautiful, historic Sylvan Learning Centre location in Toronto's Rosedale neighbourhood.

Compensation & Position Details

Pay: $19 - $22 per hour, based on qualifications and relevant experience
Position: Part-time
