Become a Legal Administrative Assistant with the Ministry of the Attorney General's Criminal Law Division and play a crucial role in the justice system. Your efforts will support criminal prosecutions and ensure the smooth operation of court activities, directly impacting the lives of Ontarians.About the job
In this role, you will:- prepare and manage files legal documents, and correspondence
- maintain Ontario and Superior Court files
- liaise with justice partners and stakeholders in other offices regarding prosecution matters
- provide support to the public by responding to inquiries by phone, in person or in writing
- provide support to legal staff in court, in person or virtually
What you bring to the team
Mandatory requirements
- You can type 50 words per minute and are able to achieve 70% in testing for spelling and grammar
- You must possess oral and written French language skills at the advanced level. Your proficiency level will be confirmed before hire
Knowledge of legal procedures and terminology
You demonstrate:- understanding of criminal statutes, rules, regulations, and policies
- familiarity with criminal prosecution programs and court procedures
- knowledge of legal terms to prepare documents and explain procedures
Communication and interpersonal skills
You can:- use legal terminology to exchange information with justice partners and the public
- provide clear and articulate explanations of court procedures and legal terms verbally and in writing
- prepare legal documents and correspondence using correct terminology
- maintain professionalism in all interactions
- work independently and as part of a team
Organizational, judgment and analytical skills
You can:- prioritize and manage workload to meet conflicting deadlines
- organize files and documents
- apply appropriate administrative procedures
- use tact and discretion when handling confidential and sensitive information
Administrative skills
You can:- update files and schedule meetings
- complete travel arrangements, order transcripts and translation within directive guidelines
- process expense documents
- identify administrative processes and use relevant templates
- apply records information management retention processes and schedules
Technical proficiency
You can:- use general office equipment, computer software and applications to perform core administrative functions
- utilize Audio-Visual/ Information Technology (AV/IT) equipment and software for case presentation in and out of court
Who we are
The Ministry of the Attorney General is committed to a responsive, innovative justice system that upholds the Rule of Law. The Criminal Law Division, with approximately 2,200 staff (1,400 legal and 800 business professionals):- Prosecutes offences under the Criminal Code, Youth Criminal Justice Act, and Provincial Offences Act.
- Conducts criminal appeals at all court levels.
- Provides specialized services (e.g., wiretaps, extraditions, search warrants).
- Advises police and government officials on criminal law.
- Sets prosecution policy across Ontario.
- Develops justice system efficiencies with stakeholders.
- Offers world-class education for prosecutors.
