Psychiatry and Medical Clinics
You will be part of a team that supports kids and youth who would not necessarily benefit from a CASA program, but still need psychiatric care as they have complex, chronic mental health diagnosis. Psychiatry and Medical Clinics provide appropriate and dedicated resources to these children, including intensive, medically monitored and community-based psychiatric care.

Job Details

Wage range: $40.28 to 53.08 per hour
Shift structure: Monday to Friday, 7.25 hours per day
Primary location: Edmonton, CASA Centre
Union: In-scope
Classification: RN/RPN
FTE: 0.80
Status: Temporary, until June 2027

About the Role
Reporting to the Program Manager, the Mental Health Nurse works collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team to provide and coordinate services such as nursing assessment and plan of care, medication administration, teaching, telephone follow up, health promotion and therapeutic interventions. The Mental Health Nurse practices according to the code of ethics and practice standards of their specific nursing college.

The Mental Health Nurse will:
  • Complete appropriate nursing assessments (physical, psychosocial and mental status) to identify mental health concerns and current risks. This includes:
    • incorporating objective findings such as laboratory and diagnostic findings, specialist reports and history.
    • medication reconciliation.
    • monitoring of physiological parameters.
    • medication side effects.
  • Integrate assessment and other data to establish appropriate long and short-term goals and provide nursing interventions to promote, maintain and restore health.
  • Monitor, evaluate and modify nursing care plans based on effectiveness of interventions and/or changes in condition or environment, in collaboration with the patient and care team.
  • Provide information and instructions to assist in understanding the clinical condition, ongoing care and management.
  • Provide relevant medication teaching.
  • Assist with individual or group therapy.
  • Accurately document findings in the health record.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrates excellent interpersonal, communication, problem solving and teamwork skills.
  • Knowledge of family therapy and group therapy is an asset.
  • Knowledge of the Health Information and Protection of Privacy Information Acts in addition to professional organization’s ethics and standards of practice.
  • Knowledge of community resources and organizations related to children’s mental health and psychiatry, critical thinking, knowledge of psychotropic medications used in the pediatric population, strong mental status assessment and knowledge of child and youth growth and development.
  • Respect and understanding of confidentiality/ability to maintain confidentiality regarding personal and sensitive information.
  • Familiarity with electronic medical records or similar information systems.
  • Apply theoretical knowledge in a clinical setting.
  • Utilize relevant research findings in daily nursing practice.

Qualifications and Experience

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree is preferred.
  • A minimum of three to five years recent pediatric experience in an ambulatory care setting, including the care and management of children with mental health problems. Acute care experience in children’s mental health would be an asset.
Certificates and/or License(s)
  • Must be a member in good standing with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta or College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Alberta.
  • Must maintain Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) certification (training provided by CASA) and be physically able to perform all interventions
Conditions of Employment
  • A satisfactory Criminal Records Check with Vulnerable Sector Search and Child Intervention Check. This would be the financial responsibility of the successful candidate.
  • Ability to pass and maintain Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) certification (training provided by CASA) as well as physical ability to perform all interventions
