Respite Worker – Community Support for Autistic Youth

Overview

We are seeking a compassionate, patient, reliable Respite Worker to provide one-to-one community support for an autistic youth.

The main focus is helping him enjoy community activities, communicate using his communication device, stay safe, and remain calm and comfortable during outings.

Personal care, including bathing, dressing, and toileting, is not required.

Main Duties

  • Support walks in nature, parks, beaches, swimming, shopping, libraries, games, restaurants, and other activities he enjoys.
  • Support safe use of public transit, including buses.
  • Help him safely cross streets and follow pedestrian and community-safety rules.
  • Use and support his communication device so he can express choices, needs, feelings, and requests for breaks.
  • Give him enough time to process information and respond without rushing or pressure.
  • Help him stay calm and regulated during outings.
  • Recognize signs of stress, sensory overload, or discomfort.
  • Offer breaks, quiet time, movement, or a change of activity when needed.
  • Support transitions into new or unfamiliar places.
  • Encourage independence, choice-making, and participation at his own pace.
  • Use calm, respectful, positive, and individualized support strategies.
  • Communicate with the family about outings, progress, communication, and safety concerns.

Requirements

  • Experience supporting autistic youth is required.
  • Experience with communication devices or non-speaking communication is strongly preferred.
  • Understanding of autism, sensory needs, emotional regulation, and positive behaviour support.
  • Patient, calm, dependable, respectful, and safety-conscious.
  • Comfortable with walking, outdoor activities, swimming, public transit, shopping, restaurants, and community outings.
  • Able to provide one-to-one supervision while respecting his autonomy and personal space.
  • Willing to learn his communication style, preferences, routines, and support needs.

Important Support Approach

He may need extra time and space in new places or situations. The Respite Worker must remain calm, patient, flexible, and respectful.

The goal is to help him feel safe, communicate his choices, enjoy meaningful activities, build confidence, and develop independence and community-safety skills at his own pace

Pay: $25.00-$32.00 per hour

Expected hours: 4.0 – 8.0 per week
