Vice President, Growth & Strategy
About us
RST Engineering is a multidiscipline engineering and project delivery firm built around a simple idea: clients should have direct access to highly experienced people who understand both the technical requirements of a project and what it takes to successfully execute the work in the real world.
We combine engineering expertise, practical solutions and responsive project delivery to help industrial, commercial and infrastructure clients move projects from concept through to execution.
Our team brings decades of experience delivering projects across Western Canada. We have deliberately built RST to be technically capable without becoming bureaucratic — giving our clients senior-level knowledge and experience, while understanding our clients’ needs with a team that remains accountable from the first conversation right through to project completion.
Position Summary
The Vice President, Growth & Strategy is an executive leadership role responsible for defining and executing the company’s growth strategy, expanding market presence, developing key client and industry relationships, and identifying opportunities that strengthen the long-term value of the business.
The role operates across strategy, business development, market intelligence, partnerships, organizational growth, and strategic initiatives. Working closely with the executive leadership team, the VP, Growth & Strategy translates the company’s broader vision into actionable growth priorities and ensures those priorities are executed with discipline.
The position is expected to be externally focused, commercially minded, and highly connected to the market, while maintaining sufficient internal involvement to ensure the company has the people, capabilities, systems, and operating structure required to support sustainable growth.
Key Responsibilities
Growth Strategy
- Develop and maintain the company’s short, medium, and long-term growth strategy.
- Identify priority markets, clients, sectors, geographic regions, and service offerings.
- Translate strategic objectives into measurable annual and multi-year growth plans.
- Evaluate growth opportunities based on revenue potential, profitability, strategic fit, risk, and organizational capability.
- Work with executive leadership to establish growth targets and monitor performance against those targets.
- Challenge assumptions and provide objective analysis regarding where the company should and should not invest its resources.
Business Development & Client Growth
- Develop and maintain senior-level relationships with key clients, industry partners, decision-makers, and stakeholders.
- Identify, qualify, and advance major business opportunities.
- Lead strategic account development for priority clients and markets.
- Support the pursuit of significant proposals, negotiations, partnerships, and contracts.
- Establish a disciplined business development process including pipeline management, opportunity qualification, pursuit strategy, and follow-up.
- Increase revenue from both existing client relationships and new market opportunities.
- Represent the company at industry events, client meetings, conferences, and strategic networking opportunities.
Enterprise & Affiliated Company Support
- Actively support the growth and strategic objectives of affiliated companies within the broader ownership group where there is a clear commercial or operational benefit.
- Identify opportunities to leverage shared client relationships, market intelligence, capabilities, geographic reach, equipment, expertise, and industry networks across affiliated businesses.
- Facilitate cross-company introductions and coordinated pursuit strategies when multiple businesses can provide a stronger, more integrated client solution.
- Support strategic planning, market development, major client initiatives, and partnerships.
- Promote collaboration without creating unnecessary overlap, internal competition or conflict, or ambiguity regarding client ownership and delivery accountability.
- Look for opportunities where the combined capabilities of the broader group can create competitive advantage, increase client value, improve win probability, or open markets that would be difficult for an individual business to pursue independently.
Market Development
- Monitor industry trends, competitors, capital programs, procurement activity, and emerging market opportunities.
- Identify gaps in the marketplace where the company can create a differentiated offering.
- Evaluate opportunities to enter new geographic markets or expand into complementary services.
- Develop market-entry strategies and business cases for new initiatives.
Strategic Partnerships & Corporate Development
- Identify and develop strategic relationships with complementary firms, contractors, consultants, technology providers, Indigenous partners, and other organizations.
- Evaluate joint ventures, teaming arrangements, strategic alliances, acquisitions, and other corporate development opportunities where appropriate.
- Lead or support commercial discussions and negotiations related to strategic partnerships.
- Assess opportunities to accelerate growth through inorganic as well as organic strategies.
Strategic Planning & Executive Leadership
- Participate as a member of the executive leadership team and contribute to company-wide strategic and operating decisions.
- Participate and contribute to annual and multi-year strategic planning.
- Establish clear priorities, initiatives, owners, milestones, and performance measures.
- Identify and communicate leadership with objective analysis regarding business performance, market opportunities, organizational constraints, and strategic risk.
- Maintain focus on the initiatives most likely to materially increase enterprise value.
- Ensure growth initiatives remain aligned with operational capacity, financial performance, culture, and the company's long-term objectives.
Brand & Market Positioning
- Help define and strengthen the company’s branding, market position and value proposition.
- Ensure marketing and communications activities support clearly defined commercial objectives.
- Provide strategic direction regarding brand development, thought leadership, digital presence, industry visibility, and client communications.
Key Performance Indicators
Performance will be assessed through a combination of financial, strategic, and organizational measures, including:
- Revenue growth and quality of revenue.
- Quality, value, and conversion of the business development pipeline.
- New client acquisition and growth within strategic accounts.
- Backlog and contracted revenue.
- Successful entry into priority markets and development of new service lines.
- Strategic partnership development and cross-company opportunities generated.
- Client retention and relationship strength.
- Successful execution of strategic initiatives.
Qualifications & Experience
- Significant senior leadership experience ideally within engineering, construction, consulting, professional services, infrastructure, industrial, or a related industry.
- Demonstrated success developing and executing business growth strategies.
- Strong record of building senior-level client relationships and generating significant new business.
- Experience managing or influencing P&L performance.
- Strong commercial judgment and understanding of revenue, margin, utilization, backlog, working capital, and business valuation.
- Experience developing new markets, services, partnerships, or business units.
- Proven ability to operate effectively across business development, operations, finance, and executive leadership.
- Strong negotiation, communication, presentation, and relationship-management capabilities.
- Ability to move comfortably between high-level strategy and hands-on execution.
Leadership Profile
- Strategic but highly execution oriented.
- Comfortable challenging conventional thinking and testing assumptions.
- Credible with executives, clients, technical professionals, contractors, and entrepreneurs.
- Highly accountable and comfortable operating with significant autonomy.
- Skilled at identifying opportunities before they become obvious to the broader market.
- Focused on building long-term enterprise value rather than pursuing revenue for revenue’s sake.
- Collaborative across affiliated businesses while maintaining clear accountability and avoiding unnecessary organizational complexity.
Decision Authority
The VP, Growth & Strategy will have significant authority to develop and recommend growth initiatives, establish strategic business development priorities, pursue key client and partnership opportunities, and deploy approved growth resources. The role may also be assigned enterprise-level initiatives that support affiliated businesses or the broader ownership group.
Major capital commitments, acquisitions, material organizational changes, and other significant investments will remain subject to the company’s established executive and governance approval processes.
