Position Title: COOK

LOCATION: Cambridge Bay, Nunavut

START DATE: Negotiable

Cambridge Bay, Nunavut is a remote community north of the 69th parallel, which is above the tree line. The local name for the community is Ikaluktutiak which mean “place of fish”. The local fish caught are Arctic Char and Lake Trout. If you enjoy the outdoors, wildlife, and sunshine, you will love Cambridge Bay. There is 24 hours of daylight until the first week of August.

Qillaq Innovations is a local contractor with a camp style lodge that can accommodate up to 40 people.

Under the direction of the General Manager, we are currently seeking a Cook for our lodge guests as well as our Take Out and Catering business.

  • Be able to manage your timing of meals, to meet catering delivery times.
  • Be able to cook meals for a variety of diets, like Gluten Free, Vegetarian, and Vegan
  • Be able to cater for groups up to 300 people
  • Prepare and cook full course meals within the Lodge.
  • Ensure quality of food and determine size of food proportions.
  • Estimate food requirements (inventory) and give requirements (shopping list) to the General Manager on a weekly basis.
  • Inspect kitchens and food service areas, maintain service, food safety and sanitation standards.
  • Work simultaneously with other kitchen and cleaning staff.
  • May have to clean kitchen, work areas, and wash dishes from time to time to ensure that all standard operating procedures are in place, that all food safety, sanitation, energy management, and preventive maintenance standards are consistently met.
  • Ensure exceptional customer service is being provided to guests and customers, by leading by example and empowering employees with a focus on continuous improvement.
  • Participate as a key member of the Kitchen Team, in delivering excellent guest and customer services in a profitable manner.
  • Work with minimal supervision.
  • Post-secondary education in Food Service Management, Hotel & Restaurant Management, Hospitality.
  • Strong understanding of budgeting, scheduling, productivity, inventory controls, food & beverage cost controls
  • Excellent interpersonal & communication skills
  • Must have a valid driver’s license; provide copy of driver’s abstract
  • Must provide confirmation of a clear criminal record
  • 3-5 years catering, culinary, or related professional experience.
  • Sound knowledge and passion for food & beverage operations
  • Proven track record of motivating and empowering people to meet or exceed goals, and to provide the highest quality experience for guests.
  • Must be able to bake and make homestyle meals from scratch, we believe in quality and this does not come out of a package.
  • Have a pleasant disposition, even under pressure.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Common Sense and the ability to improvise, as there are many times when ingredients are not available in our community.
  • Must be able to portion accurately, groceries are very expensive and the waste must be minimized.
  • Must have a good memory, can remember repeat customer’s names, guest names and preferences, and operational instructions.

The successful candidate will be expected to work a minimum of 10 hours/day, 7 days a week with a rotation of 6 weeks in and 2 weeks out. Occupational Health and Safety is of major importance and all personnel are required to follow good work practices, completing tasks in a safe and orderly manner. Some heavy lifting may be required.

  • Flights to/from home to Cambridge Bay will be provided.
  • Accommodations and meals will be provided.
  • We are looking for a high energy person who would take pride in running the kitchen as though it were their own. Someone who will go that extra mile.
  • Needs to be well organized to meet the needs of the guests, take out orders, and catering requests.
  • Needs to understand the extreme importance of food safety.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $23.00-$28.00 per hour
