The Health & Safety Engineer position exists to ensure safe, compliant, and incident free operations at Rain Carbon Canada facility. The role supports the company’s global Safety, Health & Environmental (SH&E) principles, which emphasize protecting employees, contractors, visitors, and neighboring communities of Rain Carbon Canada. The position contributes to the company’s commitment to world class operational safety excellence by ensuring regulatory compliance, reducing occupational risks, and actively promoting a strong safety culture based on worker engagement and continuous improvement.
The position plays a key role in implementing Rain Carbon’s safety initiatives—such as its Quest for Zero and Safety First programs—and in fostering proactive hazard identification, risk mitigation, and safe work behaviors across all site operations.

Duties & Responsibilities

1. Health & Safety Program Management

  • Maintain high visibility throughout the plant through routine inspections, safety walk‑throughs, and employee engagement.
  • Serve as an active member of the Joint Health & Safety Committee.
  • Support and promote Rain Carbon’s global SH&E policies and safety culture initiatives, including “Quest for Zero” and “Safety‑First 2.0,” which encourage proactive safety behaviors and continuous improvement.
2. Occupational Hygiene & Risk Management

  • Manage the annual Occupational Hygiene Program and oversee implementation of monitoring, assessments, and corrective recommendations.
  • Conduct hazard identification, participate in HAZOP studies, and support improvements aligned with Rain Carbon’s Life‑Saving Rules campaign.
3. Safety Systems, Procedures & Reporting

  • Develop, revise, and maintain site‑specific safety procedures, standards, and management systems to align with global SH&E expectations.
  • Prepare, comment on, and communicate monthly safety performance reports, including key metrics and trends.
  • Participate in incident investigations; ensure corrective actions are implemented and tracked for effectiveness.
4. Emergency Response Preparedness

  • Maintain and update site evacuation plans and emergency response protocols.
  • Coordinate regularly with external agencies, including local fire departments.
  • Ensure emergency drills are completed on schedule and documented.
5. Training & Competency Development

  • Ensure all employees receive required health and safety training in accordance with regulatory and corporate schedules.
  • Develop and manage onboarding and safety indoctrination programs for employees and contractors.
6. Compliance & External Engagement

  • Prepare for and participate in Ministry of Labor or regulatory authority visits.
  • Ensure full compliance with Environmental and Health & Safety management system requirements.
7. Advisory & Support Role

  • Serve as a technical resource to employees and management on occupational health, safety, and regulatory compliance matters.
  • Provide guidance on SH&E requirements that influence operational planning and decision‑making.
  • Monitor developments in legislation, safety standards, and industry best practices to ensure ongoing compliance.
8. Administrative Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate records, plans, and safety documentation needed for audits and regulatory compliance.
Job requirements

Education:
  • Minimum: Community College diploma, or a related technical field
  • Preferred: Bachelor’s degree and/or relevant professional designation
Experience:
  • 5–10 years of progressive experience in Health & Safety roles, in Engineering, Manufacturing or related operations environments
Additional Skills & Qualifications:
  • SAP experience considered an asset
  • Strong communication and computer skills
  • Proven troubleshooting and problem solving abilities
  • Effective conflict resolution skills
  • Demonstrated leadership capability
