Full job description

Empire Provisions is looking for an experienced, hands-on General Manager to lead our café, deli and retail shop, while assisting in the logistics for our catering company. Reporting directly to ownership, you’ll oversee daily operations, develop a strong team and help drive business performance while delivering exceptional hospitality.

This role is suited to an organized, approachable leader who is equally comfortable supporting service on the floor and managing the details behind the scenes.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead the team: Recruit, hire, train and manage all café staff. Oversee front-of-house scheduling, coaching and performance management.
  • Run daily operations: Maintain high standards for service, food quality, cleanliness and safety. Resolve guest concerns and work closely with the kitchen and catering teams.
  • Manage purchasing and inventory: Oversee suppliers, stock levels and ordering for office and store supplies, packaging, cheese, deli and retail products. Control waste and purchasing costs.
  • Own the shop’s presentation: Keep displays, shelves and service areas attractive, organized and well stocked, with thoughtful merchandising and accurate signage.
  • Maintain products and pricing: Enter new products into the point-of-sale system and keep costs, selling prices and product information current.
  • Monitor business performance: Manage labour and purchasing budgets, oversee cash controls, and report results and opportunities for improvement to ownership.
  • Support catering and events: work alongside our events team to execute catering and private functions

What You Bring

  • At least four years of hospitality, food service or food retail experience, including two years in management.
  • Proven experience hiring, training and scheduling staff, with strong communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Confidence managing purchasing, inventory, point-of-sale systems, sales reports and operating costs.
  • An eye for merchandising, attention to detail and a genuine commitment to food and hospitality.
  • ProServe certification and knowledge of food safety practices. Hospitality education is an asset.

Schedule & Working Environment

Availability may include early mornings, evenings, weekends and holidays. This is an active, hands-on role involving frequent standing and walking; lifting or moving items up to 50 lb may be required.

  • Coordinate with kitchen staff to ensure timely delivery of orders while maintaining consistency in taste and presentation.
  • Utilize POS systems such as Micros POS for order processing, cash handling, and sales reconciliation accurately.
  • Implement inventory control procedures to monitor stock levels, reduce waste, and optimize procurement.
  • Maintain excellent customer service by addressing guest inquiries, resolving issues promptly, and ensuring a welcoming environment.
  • Enforce health and safety protocols across all operations, including food safety practices aligned with industry standards.
  • Conduct regular audits of restaurant cleanliness, food safety compliance, and operational procedures to uphold quality standards.
  • Lead marketing initiatives for cafe promotions or catering events to increase visibility and revenue opportunities.

Experience

  • Proven supervising experience within the food service or hospitality industry, ideally in restaurant management or similar roles.
  • Extensive background in food preparation, cooking techniques, food handling, and serving in fast-paced environments.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills with experience managing diverse teams in restaurant or hotel settings.
  • Familiarity with POS systems such as Micros POS or similar platforms for sales processing and cash handling.
  • Strong knowledge of food safety regulations (e.g., HACCP) and best practices in food industry standards.
  • Previous experience in restaurant management or catering operations is highly desirable.
  • Excellent customer service skills with the ability to handle guest concerns professionally and efficiently.
  • Ability to interview potential team members effectively to build a strong team aligned with company values.
