The base salary will be $67,680 - $96,590 per annum. Starting salary will be aligned with the successful candidate’s experience, skills, and demonstrated qualifications.

The Department of Family Medicine specializes in training comprehensive family physicians and future leaders in family medicine. This is done through a highly adaptable program that includes tailor-made curriculum and educational programs for residents.

The Centre for Studies in Family Medicine’s (CSFM) mission is to conduct, foster, disseminate, implement excellent interdisciplinary research in family medicine, primary care, health systems and community health.

The CSFM:

• Conducts interdisciplinary research in family medicine, primary care, health systems and community health
• Fosters research and interdisciplinary collaborations by the faculty and staff of the Department of Family Medicine
• Facilitates research training for MClSc and PhD students
• Supports research capacity development for medical students, residents, and other trainees
• Furthers the understanding of family medicine practice through research

The mission and goals of Dr. Mathew’s research lab are to conduct a program of research on primary health care with interconnecting themes of the health workforce; the organization, integration, and delivery of care; and health care in rural communities. This work includes peer reviewed grants from tri-council, national, provincial, and university funding agencies, using regional, provincial and national teams and including researchers, policy makers, Canadian health professional organizations and knowledge users. The Mathews Health Services Research Lab focuses on quantitative and qualitative health services, systems and policy research, mainly within primary health care.

The Research Associate will apply their expertise and knowledge to multiple national, provincial and regional research projects, under the direction of a Principal Investigator, and will carry out research-related activities independently to assist in achieving the research outcomes. The position will play a role in providing guidance and support to staff and students in the Mathews Lab, and in resolving issues that arise in the research environment. The Research Associate will support and operationalize new and innovative research opportunities, participate in the development of research and project plans and timelines, and coordinate research activities across multiple projects. The Research Associate will plan, implement and coordinate data collection, perform qualitative and quantitative data analysis, evaluate and interpret research findings, and prepare systematic reviews, academic papers, presentations, final reports and other knowledge translation products for various stakeholders as required. The Research Associate will also contribute to grant development and applications and support the dissemination and promotion of research activities and findings.

Education:

• Master’s degree in health policy, applied health services research or a relevant discipline

Experience:

• 5 years of research experience in the health services field in a related academic research environment

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Familiarity with regulations and guidelines governing research ethics in an academic environment, including TCPS 2 standards, and with best practices for reviewing and writing grant proposals
• In-depth knowledge of methods for research design, implementation and analysis, including health services research, quantitative and qualitative research methodologies and systematic review processes
• Familiarity with techniques for updating, managing and extracting data from a research database, including the management of data collected across multiple research projects and jurisdictions
• Demonstrated working knowledge of relevant scientific and research principles, including knowledge of the Canadian primary care system and health services research environments
• Understanding of the appropriate and ethical use of artificial intelligence and emerging technologies in academic research
• Advanced qualitative research skills, including interviewing participants, preparing and applying coding templates, conducting thematic analysis and interpreting node reports across multiple projects and jurisdictions
• Advanced skills in software and applications used to produce and analyze research outcomes, including NVivo, SPSS, Covidence and Qualtrics
• Ability to collaborate across internal and external boundaries to meet common objectives, improve outcomes and support work beyond one's own unit, including participation in national, provincial and regional research initiatives
• Communication skills to describe technical concepts effectively to both novice and sophisticated users, including students, trainees, research partners and stakeholders
• Communication skills with an ability to complete detailed analyses, reports, academic papers, presentations and other knowledge translation products
• Ability to work in a manner that models best practices in confidentiality, privacy and information management standards
• Ability to provide solutions and ideas for improvement by using imaginative approaches where constructive thinking and innovation are required
• Detail-oriented with an ability to function and process information with high levels of accuracy, particularly in relation to data collection, coding, analysis and reporting
• Ability to work within a flexible schedule to accommodate project requirements, stakeholder needs and University activities
• Ability to provide guidance, support and feedback in a way that is positively received, including training and mentoring staff, students and trainees
• Results-oriented with the ability to motivate and coach students and research staff to meet high performance standards, while working effectively as a member of the research team
• Ability to investigate defined issues, solicit input and suggest remedies and alternative approaches that meet the needs of the situation
• Proven ability and natural inclination to develop relationships by interacting with people in a professional, respectful and diplomatic manner
• Ability to interpret and identify key results from research and to succinctly summarize research findings for academic, health system and other stakeholder audiences
• Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of the team to achieve department and research project goals
• Ability to adhere to legislated safety requirements, research ethics requirements and Western policies and procedures
• Commitment to ongoing professional development, continuous learning and the pursuit of new research opportunities
• Familiarity with University policies and procedures preferred
