Full job description

At Helm Operations, we build the software that keeps the world’s maritime operations moving. From tugboats in Vancouver Harbour to offshore service vessels in the North Sea, our customers run their businesses on Helm CONNECT, and we don’t take that lightly.

But world-class software doesn’t happen by chance. It takes teams who care deeply about quality, take ownership, and push for better at every step. That’s The Helm Way, and that’s where you come in.

Your Mission

We’re looking for a Quality Assurance Analyst to join our development team. Someone who thinks critically, communicates clearly, and has a strong point of view on what great software should look, feel, and do.

In this role, you’ll partner closely with developers to test new features and ensure quality is built in from the start, not added at the end. You’ll ask the right questions early, catch usability issues before customers do, and help raise the bar for how we deliver software.

You’ll work across both front-end and back-end features, so you should be comfortable using a range of tools and approaches, whether that’s testing APIs, querying databases, or leveraging AI to support thorough and efficient testing.

If you enjoy digging into details, challenging assumptions, and being part of a team that takes pride in shipping high-quality work, you’ll fit right in.

Make your impact with a rapidly growing Marine Software business!

You will:

  • Learn your assigned Helm CONNECT product area and understand how our customers use it in the real world.
  • Test new features and bug fixes, partnering closely with developers and product owners to clarify requirements, design intent, and edge cases.
  • Maintain test plans and coordinate testing efforts for releases within your product area.
  • Actively participate in stand-ups, sprint grooming, design discussions, and retrospectives.
  • Share insights, wins, and lessons learned with the QA team to continuously raise the bar.
  • Create clear, user-friendly documentation for features and workflows.
  • Contribute to Helm’s culture of teamwork, accountability, and approachability, and participate in team and company events when possible

You Bring:

  • A bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field.
  • 3+ years of software testing experience in an agile/scrum environment.
  • Strong manual testing fundamentals, including techniques like boundary testing, and risk-based prioritization. You have a propensity for identifying edge cases and chartering off the happy path.
  • Solid intuition when it comes to design and usability, not just functional correctness.
  • Comfort with Git basics: branching, pull requests, code reviews, and working in a shared repository.
  • Working knowledge of databases and APIs, including how to query and inspect them during testing
  • Excellent written and verbal English, with the confidence to ask questions and push back when something is unclear.
  • A track record of working effectively in a remote setting, including managing your own time and keeping people informed without being prompted

Bonus Points

  • Hands-on use of AI tools (like Claude) in testing, with good judgement about how to guide them towards useful, trustworthy results.
  • A clear sense for what makes a web app usable on a phone: button sizing, touch interactions, small-viewport layout, and the conventions mobile users expect. You start from who the user is and how they'll be using it.

Who You Are

  • Detail-Oriented Thinker: You notice what others miss. When something feels unclear or assumed, you ask the right questions before it becomes a problem.
  • Quality Advocate: You hold a high bar for your team. You expect clear requirements, solid builds, and thoughtful answers, and you ask for them in a way that builds trust.
  • User-Focused: You care about how things work and how they feel. If something is technically correct but awkward to use, you speak up.
  • Proactive Teammate: You bring energy and initiative. You share ideas, celebrate wins, and are quick to own and learn from mistakes.
  • Self-Directed: You manage your work effectively in a remote environment. You stay organized, communicate clearly, and keep things moving without needing to be chased.

Technologies you will be working with:

Git, JIRA, Confluence, Slack, BrowserStack, Playwright, PostgreSQL (PG Admin), Postman, Claude, PowerShell, etc.

Why You’ll Love Working at Helm

We live by our core values:

  • Together We Win – Collaboration is our superpower.
  • Own It – We take initiative and deliver on our promises.
  • Care Deeply – About our products, our customers, and each other.

  • Base salary range: $65,000 – $80,000 CAD
  • Target annual bonus based on individual and company performance

  • Comprehensive benefits health, dental & vision from day 1.
