Position Information

Position Title
Chemical Laboratory Technologist

Position Summary
Red Deer Polytechnic is seeking a detail‑oriented and safety‑focused Chemical Laboratory Technologist to support the preparation, operation, and regulatory compliance of our Chemistry laboratories. This role ensures that faculty and students have the equipment, materials, and technical guidance required to conduct safe, accurate, and engaging laboratory experiments. The Chemical Laboratory Technologist maintains inventories of chemicals and equipment, prepares laboratory materials, supports instructional activities, and upholds all safety procedures, documentation, and regulatory requirements within the Science laboratories.

Position Responsibilities
The successful candidate will fulfill the following responsibilities:
  • Prepare, set up, and test chemical solutions, materials, and instrumentation for weekly Chemistry labs across all academic terms.
  • Disassemble labs, prepare solutions for storage, and safely collect and dispose of chemical waste.
  • Ensure proper labeling, storage, and handling of chemicals in accordance with WHMIS, SDS, and internal safety procedures.
  • Use appropriate engineering controls (e.g., fume hoods) when preparing hazardous materials.
  • Maintain chemical, hardware, and instrument inventories, including annual inventory counts.
  • Track supply usage, generate purchase lists, and update inventory records when experiments change.
  • Perform daily lab tidying, safety checks, and restocking of consumables.
  • Coordinate equipment repairs and service calls; perform minor maintenance as required.
  • Maintain accurate records, manuals, warranty files, and documentation for laboratory procedures and instrumentation.
  • Maintain current knowledge of laboratory safety regulations and apply them to daily operations.
  • Develop and update safety procedures, hazard assessments, and emergency protocols for Chemistry labs.
  • Ensure regular testing and integrity of eyewash stations, safety showers, and other safety equipment.
  • Classify chemicals for safe storage using NFPA codes, SDS information, and compatibility guidelines.
  • Support extracurricular science activities for students, community groups, and school outreach.
  • Maintain and update Chemistry lab Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), forms, hazard assessments, and the SDS library.
  • Ensure all documentation meets regulatory and institutional compliance requirements.

Required Qualifications
  • Two (2) years of post‑secondary training or completion of a community college certificate in Chemical Technology or equivalent.
  • Standard First Aid (CSA Intermediate), Level C CPR, and WHMIS certification.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License
  • One (1) to two (2) years of related experience in a chemical laboratory environment.
  • Safety training and current knowledge of regulations for working in chemical laboratory settings.
  • Excellent knowledge of chemical materials, equipment, and laboratory instrumentation.
  • Proficiency with FTIR, NMR, GC‑MS, and other analytical instruments.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to support faculty, students, and new staff.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel, experience with inventory systems.
  • Excellent time management, attention to detail, and adaptability.
  • Lifting, carrying, and moving containers of chemicals, gas cylinders, and laboratory equipment up to 50 lb.
  • Standing, walking, bending, and reaching for extended periods during laboratory setup, cleanup, and inventory tasks.
  • Using fine motor skills for measuring, dispensing, assembling apparatus, and performing instrument maintenance.
  • Working in environments where personal protective equipment (PPE) such as lab coats, gloves, and safety eyewear is required.
  • Occasional work in fume hoods or areas with ventilation controls when preparing or handling hazardous materials.
