Job Overview

We are seeking a skilled and experienced Registered Cardiology Technologist to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for a range of tasks related to cardiology testing working independently within a supportive team environment. You will be responsible for performing a variety of diagnostic testing procedures, such as Electrocardiogram (ECG), Holter Monitors, Ambulatory Blood Pressures, Treadmill Stress Tests (standard and nuclear), and other types of diagnostic cardiac equipment, in compliance with established standards (CSTC guideline), policies, and therapeutic procedures to evaluate patients with cardiovascular disease. Given our non-hierarchical model of work environment, there will be opportunities for growth, increased responsibilities, and leadership that is beyond a title.

As a cardiology technologist, you will be responsible for preparing the patients for specific tests. This may involve starting intravenous. The stress tests will be supervised by the Cardiologist, and/or designate qualified nurse practitioner, or other qualified physicians trained in cardiac stress testing The Cardiology Technologist may also be responsible for precepting/mentoring all new cardiology technology students who may be doing their practicum with Symphony of Health Connections.

The successful candidate will, foremost, have a strong drive and motivation for learning and respectful collaboration with other personnel, have a natural sense of compassion and demonstrate empathy for their fellow human beings, and understand and respect the Mission, the Vision, and the Core values of Symphony of Health Connections, have a strong understanding of medical terminology, be able to operate and maintain medical equipment, participate in the establishment of standards, goals, and objectives, and work collaboratively with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals. They must abide by the relevant policy and procedures of the organization (e.g. Occupational health and safety, Information Technology, and Operations).

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Ensure correct patient identification, safety, and preparation before the test, while maintaining patient confidentiality.
  • Explain procedures to prepare patients for testing, such as ECG, stress testing, Holter monitoring, ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, and related tests.
  • Perform and scan a variety of non-invasive examinations, such as ECG, stress testing, Holter and event monitoring, and ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, ordered by the physician by attaching electrodes to the patient, operating equipment, analyzing, and recording relevant data for interpretation by a cardiologist and/or internist following established policies and procedures.
  • Monitor patients and scan test strips during stress tests and take appropriate action upon recognition of cardiac arrhythmias or other abnormalities per established policies and procedures.
  • Transfer and assign ECGs in ECG Cardiology Management systems for interpretation by medical staff. (This probably happens automatically via cloud or Bluetooth).
  • Demonstrate ECG testing procedures and operation of related equipment as required.
  • Monitor ongoing departmental activity levels and assist fellow staff to meet requests for service.
  • Maintain statistics and files completed reports.
  • Maintain equipment by cleaning, lubricating, and replacing items such as paper rolls, electrodes, and leads following the organization’s standards.
  • Ensure equipment and instruments are performing efficiently and effectively by maintaining and calibrating equipment according to manufacturer specifications.
  • Participate in the instruction/orientation of staff and/or students by assisting with departmental orientations, in-service presentations, demonstrating procedures, and answering questions, attending meetings as required.
  • Assist with ordering, restocking, and tracking supplies as directed.
  • Maintain and update your clinical knowledge within the area of practice.
  • Follow all safety procedures and protocols related to biohazardous material exposure as a priority.

Qualifications

  • Completion of a recognized program in Cardiology Technology.
  • Current registration or eligibility for registration with the Canadian Society of Cardiology Technologists (CSCT).
  • Current registration or eligibility for registration with either the Cardiology Technologist Association of British Columbia (CTABC) or the Alberta Society of Registered Cardiology Technologists (ASRCT).
  • Current certification in Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
  • Current certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Proficient in operating and maintaining medical equipment related to the position.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively collaborate with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Proven physical capability to perform the duties of the position.
  • Ability to assess the physical limitations of patients, conduct testing, and adjust accordingly.
  • Familiarity with diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for cardiovascular disease.
  • Strong sense of initiative, responsibility, attention to detail, and adherence to protocols.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills with staff and clients.
  • Computer literacy and familiarity with Microsoft Office products.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Physical Demands

The Cardiology Technologist may stand and walk for extended periods. They transport equipment and may assist with patient transfers. They will also need to be able to manipulate equipment and perform fine motor tasks.

Working Conditions

The Cardiology Technologist will work in a clinical setting. They will be required to follow safety procedures and protocols to avoid exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other hazards. As the organization grows, the position may require working some evenings and weekends, depending on the needs of the clinic.
