Tactical Security Officer


Site Description:
The Dartmouth General provides services to approximately 120,000 people in Dartmouth & surrounding areas

Position: Full-Time Tactical Guard

Site: Dartmouth General Hospital

Hours: 4 on 4 off rotation, 12 hour shifts

Payrate: $24.50

Job Description:

As a Tactical Healthcare Security Officer, you respond to alarms, emergency requests, & use your excellent verbal de-escalation skills to resolve incidents within the Emergency Department. You always maintain confidentiality and discretion when handling private information, and you never forget to smile while providing your incredible customer service.


WHAT YOU WILL DO:

  • Monitoring the Emergency Department (ED), managing any aggressive behavior of visitors, or patients within the ED; Providing security presence and support throughout the ED
  • Conduct sets of rounds within the waiting room and the rest of the ED areas
  • Assisting clinical staff with patients and/or visitors who are aggressive, using an abusive or threatening language or gestures
  • Sitting with aggressive, abusive, threatening, fall risk and flight risk patients, based on the clinical staff’s requests, in the interim while waiting for a permanent patient watch coverage, when applicable
  • Responding to the code situations, including Code White or Code Silver situations, as needed
  • You will be required to write reports & investigate routine incidents
  • Display excellent customer service skills & be able to work with people who are under stress or in need of medical assistance
  • Assist in developing security plans for high risk patients
  • Utilize verbal de-escalation techniques to manage conflict
  • Oversee & support patient watch guards within the ED
  • Work closely with local Law Enforcement and Emergency Services
  • Ensure the safety of staff, patients, and visitors within the ED
  • Assist hospital staff with patient restraints as required/directed according to operating procedures
  • Adhere to all hospital policy & procedures and maintain compliance
  • Prevent theft, violence or infraction of rules/regulations
  • Monitor site visitors & perform ID checks in accordance with site policies/procedures
  • Respond professionally to emergencies (alarms, medical emergencies, fires, & other urgent matters)
  • Effectively communicate all suspicious activities, concerns, issues, & events to our dispatch team
  • Prepare & maintain professional/effective reports regarding the activities, security violations, & hazardous occurrences on site

YOU’RE A GREAT FIT IF YOU:

  • This position includes enhanced physical requirement, including but not limited to:
    • Be able to stand up to 12 hours
    • Be able to walk & patrol the facility, including use of stairs
    • Ability to run & quickly respond to any code call within the facility
    • Be able to participate in a physical training, including use of force & physical restraint techniques
  • Have a minimum 1-2 years of experience in security
  • Diploma in Justice studies/police foundations is an asset
  • Ability to obtain Security License in Nova Scotia
  • Valid Standard/Intermediate First Aid & CPR - Level C
  • English (oral & written) fluency is a must
  • Previous experience in security, law enforcement, or related field preferred
  • Certifications in Use of Force (UOF) & Management of Aggressive Behavior (MOAB) are pre-requisites of this position. Prior training certifications may be accepted on a case-by-case basis
    • Applicants lacking acceptable certifications can opt into Paladin's UoF/MOAB training program prior to their onboarding to ensure they meet the requirements of the position
    • The UoF/MOAB training is not paid as it is a pre-requisite; however Paladin will cover all of the costs of the training with a 6-month commitment to the position/availability
