Trico LivingWell:
Trico LivingWell is a new older adult living community in Kingsland, Calgary. It is Canada's first older adult aging-in-place community who has acheived the vigorously vetted WELL v2TM Certification from International WELL Building Institute – a premier framework and performance-based system for buildings with features that advance human health and well-being worldwide. Trico LivingWell offers a campus of care and services to independent living, inclusive living, assisted living, and memory care accommodations respectful to individual rights, choices, needs, abilities and enjoyment.
We are currently recruiting for a Health Care Aide!
Shift Schedule: Part-time
Job Summary:
Reporting to the Director of Nursing, the Health Care Aide (HCA) is an unregulated healthcare employee, trained to provide personal care and related services in a Trico Living Well (TLW) community. The HCA functions under the direction, instruction, and supervision of the Registered Nurse (RN)/Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) while adhering to all related provincial/local acts and standards, regulatory health authorities, TLW’s standards, guidelines, policies and procedures and WELL Building standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Adheres and supports residents with personal care services and activities of daily living based on the personalized health care plan developed for each resident
- Supports and maintains a healthy, clean, and safe environment; including resident and nursing equipment
- Supports and encourages each resident to be as independent as possible according to documented cognitive, physical, and functional abilities
- Encourages residents to eat a proper diet and take adequate fluids while respecting the resident’s right to free choice
- Initiates and participates in wellness activities provided for residents as described in the wellness programs/services and encourages residents to socialize and participate in planned activities or programs to develop friendships with other residents
- Demonstrates awareness of non-verbal communication and a range of listening skills appropriate to the context of different residents, families, visitors and situations
- Observes, documents, and reports on any changes in residents’ mental, physical, and functional condition to RN/LPN supervisor; including safety concerns, and physical environment
- Observes, documents, and reports on residents’ health care/services utilizing appropriate forms and tools
- Escalates medical emergencies to RN/LPN supervisor immediately
- Provides cognitive, social, emotional, and psychological support to residents and families
- Understands, adheres, and practices of the Health Information Act (HIA), Supportive Living Accommodations Standards (SLAS), Accreditation Standards, WELL Building Standards, Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy (FOIPP) and Protection of Persons in Care Act (PPCA), and Public Health Act (PHA) and all applicable Acts, Legislations, Regulations, and Standards
- Notifies the RN/LPN of any resident incidents and accidents immediately and completes documentation as required
- Provides medication administration support under the direction and supervision of the RN/LPN, in accordance with the Alberta Health “Medication Administration Program” guidelines, and with recognized certification and annual competency training
- Carries out treatments as directed by regulated professional Staff, RN/LPN and documents accordingly
- Collaborates with other personnel to ensure continuity of health care and wellness services
- Cooperates with and assists other agencies providing services to residents
- Responds to resident, family and visitor concerns and ensures appropriate action is taken within decision making authority, and/or concern is reported to RN/LPN
- Responds to resident call bells and door alarms promptly
- Ensures understanding of and compliance with Resident Rights
- Demonstrates a compassion, patience, and a gentle, non-judgmental approach to caregiving
- Understands, practices, and follows all Infection Prevention and Control policies and procedures
- Knowledgeable of Occupational Health and Safety Regulations and Emergency Fire Codes and follows in performing job duties
- Supports the orientation of new HCA staff upon completion of general orientation
- Completes general orientation and HCA orientation, read all relevant policies, participates in mandatory ongoing training, in-services and education relevant to the position and responsibilities
- Ensures own personal grooming is appropriate and clothes are clean, tidy, and according to dress code
- Agrees and abides by the content in the Employee Handbook; including vaccinations as required
- Completes all other tasks as assigned
Qualifications
- Must possess good written and oral communication skills
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and customer focus skills
- Basic computer proficiency and experience required
- Current (within 6 months) Police Clearance with Vulnerable Sector Screening
- Current (within 1 year) influenza vaccination record.
- Ability to read, write, and follow verbal and written instructions consistent with the job requirements in English
- Graduate of a Health Care Aide Program- recognized by Alberta Health and must be enrolled in the Health Care Aides (HCA) Directory. (HCAs who graduated from other provinces or countries and did not complete their education through a Government of Alberta licensed post-secondary institution in Alberta must complete the Substantial Equivalence (SE) Assessment)
- Must provide Assistant with Medication certification
- 2 years + experience working with older adults in the community health services is an asset
- A genuine interest and desire in caring for people and improving their daily lives by encouraging resident autonomy to preserve dignity and self-esteem
- Valid Basic Cardiac Life Support certification an asset
- Demonstrated organizational and time management skills; working cooperatively with others in a team environment
