Full job description

About Powell Contracting

Powell Contracting is a North Vancouver-based residential construction company specializing in high-quality renovations and custom builds across the North Shore and Vancouver. We are built on a foundation of craftsmanship, clear communication, and accountability, values that run from the office to the job site.

We are a growing mid-size team, and we take pride in the fact that our office and field operate as one cohesive unit. Every project we deliver is a reflection of that coordination.

The Opportunity

We are looking for a Lead Carpenter with site supervision experience who is equally comfortable with a tool in hand and running a crew. This is a working role. You will be on site every day, working alongside your team, holding the standard on quality and craftsmanship, and making sure the job gets done right.

You will work closely with our Project Manager, who handles scheduling, budgets, and office coordination. Your job is to lead the work on the ground, keep the crew moving, and make sure the PM always has what they need to keep the project on track.

We take pride in the quality of our work and the trust we have built with our clients. We are looking for someone who holds themselves to that same standard and takes full responsibility for what happens on their site.

Residential construction experience only will be considered. Candidates from commercial, institutional, or industrial backgrounds will not be reviewed. If you have not physically led a residential job site as a working lead, this role is not the right fit.

Key Responsibilities

Onsite Leadership and Supervision

  • Work alongside your crew daily, leading by example and maintaining a high standard of workmanship on every task.
  • Coordinate carpenters, labourers, and subcontractors across all phases of residential construction.
  • Sequence trades to keep work moving efficiently with no unnecessary delays between stages.
  • Inspect work at each stage and confirm it meets specification before the project moves forward.
  • Run daily toolbox meetings to brief the crew, address any concerns, and set the plan for the day.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized job site at all times.

Communication with the Project Manager and Office Team

  • Check in with the Project Manager daily with a clear update on progress, upcoming needs, and any issues on site.
  • Submit daily site logs and photos on time, every day. This is a firm expectation of the role.
  • Communicate scope changes, trade issues, or schedule concerns to the PM promptly so the office can respond in time.
  • Participate in weekly production and scheduling meetings with the PM and office team.
  • Keep the office informed so they always have what they need to make good decisions.

Subcontractor and Client Relations

  • Coordinate subcontractors on site, holding them to their agreed scope, schedule, and standard of work.
  • Conduct client site visits professionally and clearly, directing anything beyond your scope to the PM.
  • Maintain solid working relationships with trades and suppliers.

Documentation and Site Administration

  • Prepare and submit change order requests, RFIs, and site documentation accurately and on time.
  • Manage material deliveries on site and flag any shortages or delays to the PM straight away.
  • Keep site records up to date to support the PM's budget tracking and project reporting.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 8 years of experience in residential construction, with demonstrated experience in renovations and custom builds.
  • Residential construction experience only. Commercial, institutional, and industrial backgrounds will not be considered.
  • Solid hands-on carpentry skills with the willingness to work alongside your crew when needed.
  • Production minded with safety as the top priority on every site, every day.
  • Thorough knowledge of residential construction methods, trade sequencing, BC Building Code, and WorkSafe BC requirements.
  • Consistent and reliable communication with the PM and office team, without needing to be asked.
  • Good judgment in the field, able to make decisions independently and know when to bring something to the PM.
  • Organized enough to stay on top of site documentation without it pulling you away from the work.
  • Comfortable with project management software and standard construction documentation tools.
  • Valid driver's licence.

What We Offer

  • $90,000–$105,000 per year, based on experience.
  • Extended health, dental, and vision coverage following the probationary period.
  • 10 days of paid vacation plus all BC statutory holidays.
  • Direct access to ownership and real opportunity to grow with the company.
  • A team that respects the trades and values people who take pride in their work.
  • Stable, full-time employment with a company that is invested in your long-term success.
  • Company events, on-site parking, and a straightforward, no-nonsense work environment.
