Full job description

Milestone Foster Homes is licensed by the Ministry of Children, Community & Social Services. Our team of professional caregivers provides residential and staff model, treatment foster care to children ages 0-18 who are in the care of various child welfare agencies in Ontario. We are currently looking for a full time Controller/Financial Planning and Analysis Manager.

Position Summary

The Controller / FP&A Manager is responsible for overseeing Milestone's accounting operations, financial reporting, internal controls, budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis functions. This role combines traditional controllership responsibilities with strategic financial planning and analysis (FP&A) support to help drive informed business decisions, operational efficiency, and financial performance.

Key Responsibilities:

Controllership & Accounting

  • Oversee day-to-day accounting operations including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and month-end/year-end close processes.
  • Prepare and review accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, company policies, and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain and improve internal controls, accounting policies, and financial procedures.
  • Manage cash flow and banking relationships.
  • Coordinate annual audits, tax filings, and interactions with external auditors and advisors.
  • Monitor and reconcile balance sheet accounts and ensure accuracy of financial records.
  • Identify, support and document accounting system optimization and process improvements (standard operating procedures).

Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A)

  • Lead the annual budgeting process.
  • Prepare rolling forecasts and financial projections.
  • Analyze financial performance against budget, forecast, and prior periods.
  • Develop management reporting packages, dashboards, and KPI analysis.
  • Perform ad hoc financial analyses to support strategic initiatives, pricing decisions, cost management, and operational improvements.
  • Assist leadership with scenario modeling, profitability analysis, and business planning.
  • Identify trends, risks, and opportunities and provide actionable recommendations.

Business Partnership & Leadership

  • Partner with business leaders to improve financial understanding and accountability.
  • Present financial results and insights to leadership team.
  • Support strategic planning initiatives and operational decision-making.
  • Mentor, train and supervise accounting and finance staff.
  • Drive continuous improvement in financial reporting and analytical capabilities.

Qualifications

  • CPA designation required.
  • Master’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field preferred.
  • 5–10+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience, including controllership and FP&A responsibilities.
  • Strong knowledge of financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and internal controls.
  • Experience with cloud-based accounting and financial systems.
  • Advanced Excel and financial modeling skills.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience with QuickBooks Online, Dext, and Plooto strongly preferred.
  • Experience with budgeting, forecasting, and management reporting.
  • Exposure to nonprofit, social services, healthcare, or foster care environments considered an asset.
  • Experience supporting operational leadership with financial insights and ad hoc analysis.
