We specialize in global shipping and bulk delivery of deuterium oxide products for the Life Sciences, High Technology and Environmental Science sectors. Since our founding in 2009, Isowater has assembled flexible, skilled, and responsive customer support, and technology development teams. Our scientists and engineers offer leading laboratory and industrial expertise, cutting edge processing technology and advanced analytical capabilities. Isowater has a division operating out of the Hydrogen Optimized trade name, focused on hardware manufacturing and development, particularly the manufacture and sales of large-scale industrial water electrolysis.

Isowater is currently seeking a Head of the Test Facility for Water Electrolysis and Deuterium Extraction and Senior Process Engineer, reporting to the CTO and CEO.

Responsibilities for this position include:

Leading the Test Facility with a team of operators and management of process engineering, design and operation of the test facility for water electrolysis and deuterium extraction for carrying out technology validations including design adjustments and execution of test programs while ensuring full compliance with safety standards and environmental regulations.

  • Leading a team of operators and management of operations of a test facility ($10 million CAD investment).
  • Leading commissioning, pre-H&S start-up, routine start-up, operation, shutdown and maintenance activities.
  • Execution of test programs and technology validations in alignment with the product development department.
  • Maintaining up-to-date documentation and operation instructions in collaboration with the engineering dept.
  • Maintaining personal protection equipment and devices ready for safe use.
  • Develop appropriate training and ensure the training of personnel in regards of start-up and shutdown procedures, operation and safety.
  • Leading planning, designing and reviewing design changes and HAZOP programs for the test facility required as per the test programs in collaboration with the engineering department including: Producing heat and material balances, process flow diagrams (“PFD”). Preparing process and instrumentation drawings (“P&ID”). Preparing functional design specifications (“FSD”). Calculating equipment and piping sizing. Producing equipment specifications. Acting as the process subject matter expert, you will participate in process hazard analysis (“PHA”). Providing process information and sizing information for instrumentation. Preparing interlock logic diagrams. Identifying and leading programs for safe equipment operating limits including alarms and trips. Preparing operating manuals, working instructions and technical reports. Leading equipment 3D model reviews, piping design reviews, and building plan layout reviews.
  • Leading performance reviews of the test facility personnel.
  • Preparing capital authorization requests to improve operations, costs, reliability, safety and
  • environmental systems.
  • Assisting with the submission of SR&ED reports.
  • Production planning as required.

The ideal candidate for this position will have the following qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree or PhD. in Chemical Engineering, or Applied Sciences.
  • Licensed by a Professional Engineering Association (in Canada) is required. Members of Professional Engineers of Ontario is preferred.
  • Minimum 10 years’ chemical process engineering experience.
  • Minimum 5 years’ Management experience
  • Minimum 3 years of commissioning and/or operation experience in chemical plants/test facilities.
  • Experience with hydrogen or explosive gases.
  • Experience with Process Safety Management programs (CSA – Z767-24), standards and regulations including HAZOP/HAZID processes.
  • Experience with the Canadian Hydrogen Instillation Code Reg. 214/01, and TSSA regulations.
  • Knowledge about ISO standards and procedures – ideally hydrogen related such as 22734 (2019 or 2025).
  • Experience with process engineering design sizing and validating equipment such as pipes, pumps, tanks, heaters, filters, crystallizers, fans, compressors, packed columns, absorption units, electrolysis equipment, etc.
  • Experience with instrumentation sizing such as control valves and pressure safety devices.
  • Experience preparing heat and mass balance, process improvement and optimization
  • Strong technical writing skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills.
  • Flexibility to take on stretch assignments.
  • Experienced in Microsoft Office applications such as Outlook, Excel, Word, Project, and PowerPoint.
