General Purpose
The College of Biological Science is seeking a creative self-starter skilled in storytelling and digital media, including photography, graphic design, and video, and with an interest in the sciences.
The Digital Communications Specialist will put their skills to use highlighting the strengths of the College of Biological Science, both in research and teaching, recruiting prospective students, celebrating successes, and building a sense of community among students, faculty, staff, and alumni.
The Specialist will be responsible for proposing, planning, creating, managing, and evaluating digital communications and multimedia projects, as well as providing day-to-day support across digital platforms. They will produce both written communications, including articles, newsletters and reports, as well as multimedia content, including photography, graphic design and videos, for a range of audiences, including prospective students, current students, faculty and staff, alumni, and the general public.
Duties and Responsibilities
Digital Content and Multimedia
Propose, plan and create engaging digital content, including photography, graphic design, and videos for use on websites, social media, digital screens, posters, marketing materials, email campaigns and more, using design, photography and videography software.
Capture the college community, facilities, research, and initiatives through photography and videography, including at events, in labs, classes, and on campus.
Propose, plan, film and edit video content, including interviews with students, faculty and staff, and B-roll footage capturing the college community, facilities, research and initiatives for a variety of purposes, including in marketing, celebrating successes, sharing and translating research, and raising awareness of the college’s strengths.
Content Development and Storytelling
Propose and write articles and profiles of various lengths and styles for a range of audiences, highlighting CBS’s research, teaching, and initiatives, as well as standout students and alumni.
Plan and coordinate the promotion of college events across digital channels, including for undergraduate and graduate students, faculty and staff. Provide live coverage on social media (occasional weekend work required).
Contribute to newsletters for faculty and staff, students, and the alumni community.
Track mentions of the college in the media and share as appropriate on college channels.
Attend relevant University communications meetings and collaborate with communicators across the university.
Ensure that the University’s brand, messaging and style guides are adhered to in all digital communications.
Web and Social Media Management
Develop, update and manage content on the college and departmental Drupal and SharePoint websites, including news, events, articles, marketing content and information.
Maintain CBS’s social media accounts, regularly creating, posting and resharing content, including research spotlights, student profiles, event promotion and coverage.
Work with students to produce authentic content for social media, including posts and reels, that showcase their experiences.
Develop and maintain a content calendar aligned with key institutional priorities and events.
Maintain a consistent look and feel across all digital platforms, ensuring content is accurate, accessible (AODA compliant), and SEO-optimized.
Track, analyze and report on digital media metrics, including website analytics, and their impact and outcomes
Other Duties
Support the writing and design of annual college reports, including the CBS Research Impact and Performance Report.
Provide guidance and support to staff members about best practices for social media, website updates, graphic design, digital accessibility standards, and brand guidelines.
Maintain and add to the archive of digital media assets for the college, including photos, videos, and graphics.
Monitor and apply emerging trends, tools, and best practices in social media, digital content, accessibility standards, and search (SEO/GEO).
Requirements
Diploma or degree in communications, journalism, science, digital media, photography, media production, or a related field.
A minimum of 1-3 years of experience in digital media and communications, including article writing, website management, and social media management.
Experience creating digital content across multiple formats, including writing, photography, videography, graphic design, and social media.
Experience with Adobe Creative Suite and professional photography and videography equipment.
Experience updating and managing content in content management systems (e.g., Drupal, SharePoint).
Knowledge of analytics, digital accessibility standards, and emerging trends and tools in digital communications.
