Education Youth Counsellor: Part-Time Contract Position

Dalhousie Youth Support Services provides service to justice involved youth in Peterborough and surrounding county. We are seeking an Education Youth Counsellor who is a skilled and energetic individual able to deliver programs designed to develop youth skills with a focus on reducing criminogenic risk factors through motivational case management. This role is primarily in our school program called the Enhanced Learning Program.

All applicants are REQUIRED to submit their resume and statement of interest. The statement of interest must detail why you are interested in the position and how your qualifications meet the requested criteria.

Responsibilities include but not limited to:

· Establish and maintain rapport with the youth justice involved youth and at risk youth

· Engage and work motivationally with youth to enhance desire to learn and/or re-engage to learn

· Help design teaching modules for youth on a variety of different topics including social skills, cooking, financial literacy, etc.

· Facilitate one on one and group programs

· Achieve and maintain required program outcomes, targets and service levels

· Provide case management duties including file maintenance

· Collect information for statistical purposes specific to youth and program

· Demonstrate ability to model pro-social skills

· Demonstrate initiative to work as part of a team to ensure the effective delivery of service to youth

· Ingenuity in developing alternative strategies to meet individualized programming

· Application of crisis intervention techniques and behaviour management skills

The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:

· University degree and/or Community College diploma in related field

· Priority will be given to applicants with a teaching background or program delivery experience as well as addictions and mental health training and experience

· Training and experience in motivational interviewing with strong organizational, effective time management and planning skills

· Knowledge and experience in mental health and substance abuse as it applies to youth

· Current experience working with youth justice involved youth and at risk youth

· Knowledge and understanding of the Youth Criminal Justice Act and the Youth Justice Service Delivery System

· Analytical ability and effective problem solving skills in assessing youth needs

· Multicultural sensitivity and commitment to work with socially and economically disadvantaged youth

· Proven communication, presentation and interpersonal skills

· Proven track record in meeting targets and deadlines

· Trained in crisis intervention strategies and behavioural management skills

· Ingenuity in developing alternative strategies to meet individualized programming

· Results oriented, highly motivated person able to work independently and cooperatively in a team

· Proficient computer skills: MS office, Adobe PDF, third party emails, photo editing/ manipulating, databases, social media

· Must provide minimal of 2 employment references and a current Vulnerable Persons Criminal Reference Check at time of interview as well as proof of covid 19 vaccination.
