Since the inception of this unit in 2001, we have become one of the most reputable child and adolescent mental health inpatient units in the region. Over recent years, this unit has provided quality mental health care to children and adolescents presenting with a variety of mental health diagnoses, medical conditions and/or addiction issues. This unit uses a team approach to care planning and delivery of care. Working in collaboration with our Social Workers, Psychiatrists, and Registered Nurses, the Child & Youth Worker will provide direct care and supervision to patients and their families within the framework of a treatment plan formulated by the multi-disciplinary team. The Child & Youth Worker will promote health and well-being, recognize patient dignity, and regard patients and their families as an essential partner in the delivery of healthcare.
Affiliated with the University of Toronto and as part of our larger Mental Health and Addictions program, we provide trauma informed care and developmentally appropriate services while strengthening our community partnerships to promote recovery. Qualifications include:
- Diploma or degree in Child & Youth Care.
- Membership in good standing in the Ontario Association of Child & Youth Care (OACYC) on hire or willingness to join within one (1) year of start date.
- Demonstrated experience working with emotionally disturbed adolescents and their families, together with knowledge of psychiatric disorders.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in mental health services including case management and crisis management for children and adolescents preferred.
- Work experience in a hospital setting within the inpatient unit, outpatient program or the emergency room is considered an asset.
- Experience in developing, organizing and facilitating psycho-educational groups.
- Ability to prioritize and make decisions affecting patient care.
- Ability to take initiative and leadership, as appropriate.
- Practice in a manner consistent with the philosophy of continuous quality improvement.
- Remain abreast of current literature and changing practice patterns.
- Ability to work effectively and co-operatively with a variety of professionals and patients.
- Demonstrates flexibility and adaptability to change.
- Demonstrates a good understanding of customer service.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Assumes responsibility for aspects of practice including issues related to productivity and utilization.
- Satisfactory attendance record.
