ABOUT THE ROLE
Under the direct supervision of the Cultural Outreach Supervisor – Cultural Outreach Team, Nanaadawe’ewin (Traditional Healing Program), Indigenous Health, N’doo’owe Binesi, the Indigenous Peer Support Worker will work within the Cultural Outreach Team across St. Joseph's Care Group including work within the GAPPS team, which is a partnership with St. Joseph's Care Group, Canadian Mental Health Association, and Norwest. The IPSW plays a key role in increasing client engagement, improving client experiences and outcomes by reducing stigma and upholding dignity while supporting equitable access to wholistic care. The IPSW will support clients by informing self-directed, recovery focused wellness strategies by drawing on lived experience, Indigenous knowledge systems, and harm-reduction principles to help clients achieve their stated goals. The IPSW is accountable for fostering a culturally safe, inclusive, and respectful environment for Indigenous clients and families, ensuring they feel heard, valued, and supported throughout their care journey.
The IPSW will be a well-organized individual who exhibits initiative, flexibility, sound judgement and good interpersonal skills. Duties include one-to-one work assisting clients in achieving goal(s), acquiring new skills or linking with community resources; and attending meetings as required.

WHAT YOU BRING
Education/Experience:
- An individual who is of Indigenous ancestry with an entry level understanding of Indigenous culture and tradition, worldview, history, ceremonies, and language.
- Lived experience with homelessness, mental health and/or substance use challenges.
- Have personal experience receiving services within the housing, mental health and/or addiction systems.
- Grade 12 High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of 1 year experience providing peer support to Indigenous Adults living with and managing mental health and/or substance use challenges that are in active recovery.
Skills/Abilities:
- Entry level knowledge of Indigenous cultures, languages, traditions, and spiritual practices.
- Ability to work with diverse Indigenous communities, including youth, families, and Elders.
- Commitment to become a Certified Peer Supporter through completion of certification requirements and mentoring.
- Commitment to honouring individuals’ rights to refuse assistance.
- Demonstrated understanding of Self Care as it relates to Peer Support and Self-Management skills.
- Demonstrated understanding of Recovery and the Stages of Change.
- Demonstrates compassionate, people-centred care with dedication to supporting individual wellness.
- Strong interpersonal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
- Demonstrated regular attendance at work and reliability.
- Ability to speak Anishinaabemowin or Anishininimowin is preferred.

Conditions of Employment:
- This position shall be conditional upon a satisfactory Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC) where indicated, to ensure the absence of relevant criminal convictions.
- Will be required to travel to various work locations and provide own transporation
