Job description:

The Human Resources Generalist provides comprehensive, hands-on HR support across the employee lifecycle while progressively contributing to strategic human resources initiatives. This role partners with leaders and employees to support talent acquisition, employee relations, performance management, and compliance, while promoting a positive workplace culture within a manufacturing environment

Responsibilities

Talent Acquisition & Workforce Planning

  • Partner with hiring managers to define role requirements, prepare job descriptions, and support workforce planning activities.
  • Manage full-cycle recruitment, including job postings, sourcing, interviewing, selection, and onboarding.
  • Support internal transfers, promotions, and workforce movement.
  • Conduct exit interviews and analyze trends to inform retention and engagement strategies.

Employee Relations & Performance Management

  • Serve as a trusted advisor to managers and employees on employee relations, performance management, and conflict resolution matters.
  • Conduct workplace investigations and support ethics or compliance-related concerns.
  • Coach managers on performance documentation, corrective action, and employee development.
  • Provide documentation and support related to disciplinary actions and terminations.

Compensation, Benefits & HR Administration

  • Assist with salary and benefits administration, including annual review processes and benefits enrollment support.
  • Work with compensation team to analyze data to support job evaluations and compensation-related decisions.
  • Ensure accurate, timely HR communications related to employee changes.
  • Support effective collaboration between HR and payroll functions.

HR Policy, Compliance & Health & Safety

  • Interpret and apply HR policies consistently, ensuring compliance with Alberta employment standards, occupational health & safety legislation, and company policies.
  • Stay current on employment law and HR best practices; provide guidance to leaders as needed.
  • Support audits and maintain documentation related to regulatory and compliance requirements.
  • Assist with workers’ compensation administration and workplace safety initiatives.

Learning, Culture & Continuous Improvement

  • Support training needs assessments and coordination of employee development opportunities.
  • Participate in employee engagement, recognition, and culture-building initiatives.
  • Contribute to HR projects related to organizational change, process improvement, and workforce effectiveness.
  • Support the implementation, optimization, and ongoing use of HRIS and digital HR tools.
  • Utilize HR metrics and analytics (e.g. recruitment, turnover, engagement data) to support decision-making and continuous improvement efforts.

Job Dimensions

  • Operates as a hands-on HR Generalist with responsibility for day-to-day HR execution.
  • Independently manages routine and moderately complex HR matters while escalating sensitive or high-risk issues appropriately.
  • Partners with leaders across all levels and functional areas, including manufacturing and office environments.
  • Balances operational responsibilities with participation in strategic HR initiatives, system enhancements, and organizational change efforts.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or a related field is required.
  • Professional HR designation (e.g., CPHR) or progress toward certification is preferred.

Experience

  • 3+ years of progressive experience in a Human Resources Generalist or similar HR role.
  • Experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment is strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting recruitment, employee relations, and performance management processes.
  • Exposure to workplace investigations, policy development, and compliance activities.

Knowledge, Skills & Competencies

  • Strong working knowledge of Alberta employment standards, workplace investigations, and occupational health & safety requirements.
  • Strong business acumen with practical, hands-on HR orientation.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and facilitation skills.
  • Ability to analyze issues, interpret data, and recommend sound, practical solutions.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications and HRIS/HCM platforms (Workday or Dayforce preferred).
  • Ability to interpret HR metrics and provide actionable insights.
  • Familiarity with emerging HR technologies and automation tools; AI exposure is considered an asset.
  • High level of discretion, professionalism, and ability to handle confidential information.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Working Conditions

  • Office-based role with regular interaction in a manufacturing environment; use of personal protective equipment may be required.
  • Weekly travel between work locations (Nisku and Red Deer) as needed.
