Full job description

Carfra Lawton LLP is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Bookkeeper to join our team in Victoria.

This is a hands-on position with responsibility for a broad range of day-to-day accounting, trust, accounts receivable, accounts payable, banking and month-end activities. The successful candidate will be highly organized, comfortable working with detailed financial information, and able to manage recurring accounting responsibilities while responding to the changing priorities of a busy professional-services environment.

Experience in a law firm or other professional-services environment would be a strong asset, particularly experience with trust accounting and legal accounting software.

Key Responsibilities

The position will include responsibility for a combination of the following:

  • Daily bank reconciliation and balancing of firm accounts
  • Trust accounting, including deposits, transfers, cheque processing and reconciliations
  • Accounts receivable administration, monitoring and follow-up
  • Accounts payable administration, processing client payments and other receipts
  • Processing write-offs and accounting adjustments
  • MasterCard reconciliation, coding and supporting documentation
  • General ledger reconciliations and supporting schedules
  • Month-end closing procedures
  • Preparation and maintenance of accounting reports and working papers
  • Assistance with billing-related accounting requirements and client-specific billing arrangements
  • Identification and investigation of reconciliation discrepancies
  • Assistance with the continued development and documentation of accounting procedures and internal processes
  • Liaising with lawyers, administration and other members of the firm regarding accounting matters
  • Assistance with payroll processing and administration as required
  • Preparation and filing of GST/PST returns
  • Other accounting and administrative duties as required

Qualifications & Experience

The ideal candidate will bring:

  • Post-secondary education in accounting, bookkeeping, business administration or a related discipline
  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Several years of full-cycle bookkeeping or accounting experience
  • Strong understanding of bank and general ledger reconciliations
  • Experience with accounts receivable and month-end accounting processes
  • Excellent attention to detail and commitment to accuracy
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Ability to manage multiple recurring deadlines and competing priorities
  • Sound judgment and discretion when handling confidential financial information
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively

Strong Assets

  • Previous accounting experience within a law firm
  • Experience with trust accounting and Law Society trust requirements
  • Experience with ProLaw or comparable legal practice-management/accounting software
  • Experience with professional-services billing and accounts receivable

The Successful Candidate

This position would suit a detail-oriented professional who enjoys being closely involved in the day-to-day financial operations of an organization and who takes pride in maintaining accurate, well-organized accounting records and processes.

The successful candidate will be dependable, analytical and comfortable investigating discrepancies rather than simply processing transactions. They will understand the importance of confidentiality, internal controls, documentation and consistency within a professional-services environment.

Compensation

We offer a very competitive salary, extended benefits, 35 hour work week, flexible hours, vacation and paid time off, flex days, free underground secure parking, modern office space, RRSP contributions and casual dress.

We welcome and encourage applications from women, visible minorities, indigenous peoples, persons with disabilities, persons of diverse sexual orientation or gender identity or expression (LGBTQ2S+) and others who may contribute to diversity at Carfra Lawton LLP.

All applicants interested in an opportunity to join our well-respected firm, please submit your resume and cover letter to the attention of Ms. Kelly Franklin at kfranklin@carlaw.ca. [Applications sent solely through Indeed will not be reviewed or responded to].
