Criminal Paralegal / Legal Assistant — Temporary Leave Coverage

Salloum & Company — Edmonton, AB
Full-time | In-person | Temporary / Fixed-Term Contract
Term: 3 months, with the possibility of extension or transition to a permanent role

Salloum & Company is a growing Edmonton law firm with a busy criminal defence practice. We are looking for an experienced, organized, and reliable Criminal Paralegal / Legal Assistant to assist our office on a temporary basis while a staff member is away on medical leave.

This is currently intended to be a temporary leave coverage position for 3 months. There may be a possibility of extension or a transition into a permanent role depending on the needs of the firm, but no permanent position is guaranteed at this time.

The successful candidate will support lawyers with criminal matters, client communication, court scheduling, file management, disclosure, Legal Aid administration, and general day-to-day litigation support.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will assist with criminal law files, including:

  • Opening, organizing, and maintaining criminal client files
  • Communicating with clients, Crown prosecutors, court clerks, Legal Aid, police services, probation officers, and other justice-system participants
  • Scheduling client meetings, court appearances, bail hearings, resolutions, trials, JPTs, pre-trials, and other court-related dates
  • Managing calendars and helping lawyers stay on top of court dates, deadlines, and follow-ups
  • Requesting, receiving, downloading, organizing, and saving disclosure
  • Reviewing files to ensure disclosure, court documents, undertakings, release orders, informations, endorsements, and correspondence are properly organized
  • Preparing basic correspondence to clients, Crown, court, Legal Aid, and other parties
  • Assisting with Legal Aid certificates, billing support, authorizations, and related administrative tasks
  • Preparing and organizing materials for bail hearings, resolutions, sentencing, trial preparation, and applications
  • Filing, scanning, printing, photocopying, and assembling documents
  • Tracking limitation dates, disclosure issues, undertakings, release conditions, and required follow-up items
  • Taking detailed messages and ensuring urgent criminal matters are brought to the appropriate lawyer’s attention
  • Assisting with general office administration where needed

Qualifications

We are looking for someone who has:

  • Previous criminal law office experience
  • Strong knowledge of criminal court procedure and legal office workflow
  • Excellent organization and attention to detail
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to deal professionally with clients who may be stressed, emotional, in custody, or facing serious charges
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with competing deadlines
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Outlook, Word, Adobe/PDF software, and general file management systems
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information
  • Strong calendar management and follow-up skills
  • Reliability, punctuality, and good judgment
  • Ability to work independently while also being part of a team
  • Legal Aid experience is an asset
  • Experience with criminal disclosure systems and court filing processes is an asset
  • Arabic language skills are an asset, but not required
