Full job description

Paralegal – Small Claims Litigation

Powell Litigation | 80 Richmond St W, Suite 1300, Toronto, ON M5H 2A4 In-Person | Full-Time | Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM Salary: $60,000/year

About Powell Litigation

Powell Litigation is a boutique civil litigation firm founded by Weston Powell, dedicated exclusively to advocating for individuals and small to medium-sized businesses across Toronto and Southern Ontario. We take on the disputes that matter most to our clients — from commercial and contractual conflicts to small claims, debt collection, employment, and estate litigation — and we resolve them with clear communication, cost-efficient strategy, and courtroom-ready preparation.

We've been voted Best Law Firm by the Toronto Star Readers' Choice Awards, hold an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau, and are backed by hundreds of five-star client reviews. Our approach is simple: straightforward communication, proactive planning, and aggressive advocacy when it counts.

The Opportunity

We are looking for an experienced Paralegal to take ownership of our Small Claims Court practice. This is a hands-on role for someone who knows the Small Claims process inside and out and can manage a caseload independently, from intake through to judgment and enforcement.

This is an in-person position based at our downtown Toronto office, Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. We work closely as a team, and this role requires being on-site to collaborate directly with counsel and staff.

Key Responsibilities

  • Draft and file Small Claims Court documents, including Plaintiff's Claims, Defences, Motions, and Notices
  • Manage the full lifecycle of small claims files — intake, disclosure, negotiation, settlement conferences, and trial preparation
  • Appear at settlement conferences and trials as permitted under Law Society of Ontario rules for licensed paralegals
  • Conduct legal research on small claims and civil procedure matters
  • Communicate directly with clients, opposing parties, and court staff
  • Track deadlines, organize evidence, and maintain disclosure obligations
  • Draft Offers to Settle and support settlement strategy

What You Bring

  • Licensed Paralegal in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario
  • Minimum 5 years of experience handling Small Claims Court matters
  • Strong working knowledge of the Rules of the Small Claims Court and the Courts of Justice Act
  • Excellent drafting, legal research, and client communication skills
  • Comfortable managing a high-volume caseload with minimal supervision
  • A proactive, detail-oriented approach and sound judgment under pressure

Why Join Powell Litigation

  • Direct mentorship and collaboration with founder Weston Powell
  • Real case ownership in a firm built on trial-readiness and results
  • A collaborative, boutique environment with a strong team culture
  • Competitive compensation of $60,000/year

Next Steps

We thank all candidates for applying, but will only be reaching out if you have been selected for an interview. If hired, you will be joining one of the best legal teams in Canada.
