Full job description

Overview

The National Cattle Feeders' Association (NCFA) and the Alberta Cattle Feeders' Association (ACFA) are seeking an accomplished executive to lead government relations, policy development, and advocacy on behalf of Canada's cattle feeding industry.

Canada's beef sector contributes more than $38.5 billion annually to the economy, with Alberta accounting for approximately 70% of Canada's fed cattle production. Together, NCFA and ACFA provide leadership on the policy, regulatory, and economic issues that shape the industry's long-term competitiveness and sustainability.

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Vice President serves as the senior government relations representative for both organizations and is the primary voice for Canada's cattle feeders in Ottawa. Working closely with two producer-led Boards of Directors, the successful candidate will build relationships with government, industry, and stakeholders while advancing strategic policy priorities across provincial and federal jurisdictions.

This position offers a unique opportunity to influence national agricultural policy while helping shape the future of one of Canada's most important agricultural industries.

Duties

  • Lead the development and execution of policy and advocacy strategies for both Associations.
  • Monitor federal and provincial policy, legislative, and regulatory developments and provide strategic advice to the CEO and Boards.
  • Serve as the organizations' primary representative with Ministers, Members of Parliament, senior public servants, and government officials.
  • Build and strengthen relationships with provincial cattle feeder organizations, industry partners, and stakeholder groups.
  • Represent NCFA and ACFA on national committees, industry boards, and collaborative initiatives.
  • Lead government relations activities, including NCFA's annual Lobby Days.
  • Support the CEO through Board reporting, strategic planning, and member engagement.
  • Communicate emerging policy issues and industry developments affecting Canada's beef sector.

Skills

  • Senior leadership experience in government relations, public affairs, agriculture, business, economics, or a related field.
  • Experience working with federal and/or provincial governments.
  • Experience supporting or advising Boards of Directors.
  • Strong understanding of public policy development and political decision-making.
  • A proven ability to influence senior decision-makers and build trusted relationships across government and industry.
  • Strategic thinking and political acumen.
  • Knowledge of Canada's beef industry and agricultural policy is considered a strong asset.
  • Exceptional relationship-building and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Strong communication and negotiation abilities.
  • Sound judgment and the ability to navigate complex policy environments.
  • Collaborative leadership suited to member-driven organizations.
  • The ability to balance strategic priorities with operational execution.
  • Initiative, independence, and the capacity to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
