Full job description
Chief Administrative Officer
Situated in a beautiful valley surrounded by forest, valleys, mountains, lakes, and rivers, Lillooet is a paradise for any outdoor enthusiast. Along with superb fishing, a golf course, wineries and dozens of hiking and mountain biking trails, Lillooet has a rich culture and history which includes the Northern St'át'imc tradition and the Gold Rush era, as well as cattle ranching and, most recently, viticulture.
Known for its hot, dry summers and mild autumn weather, Lillooet is located in the unceded traditional territories of the St’át’imc Nation, which includes Xwísten (Bridge River Indian Band), Ts'kw'aylaxw (Pavilion Indian Band), Sekw’el’was (Cayoose Creek Band), Tsal'alh (Seton Lake Band), T’it’q’et (Lillooet Indian Band), and Xaxl’ip (Fountain Band). There is an abundance of sunshine in the semi-desert climate and no shortage of outdoor activities including fishing, hiking, biking, boating, and skiing in the winter.
Lillooet is also known for the Apricot-Twaqwem Festival lawn dance and beer garden, the Fraser River salmon run, and the annual Harvest Festival. Other regular events draw participants from around the region including the Fort Berens Estate Winery, weekly farmers market, Route 99 car show, drag races and concerts in the Miyazaki House gardens during the summer season.
Families, retirees, and digital nomads are choosing this area for a lifestyle that offers easy access to outdoor recreation and a friendly small town vibe while still being able to get that dose of ‘city life’ whenever needed in nearby Vancouver, Kamloops, or Whistler, all of which are within a half day drive. Lillooet also has several public schools, a high school, its own Recreation Education and Cultural Centre with pool and ice arena, a satellite campus of Thompson Rivers University, an Acute Care Hospital and emergency/911 services.

This an opportunity for an aspiring local government professional to become the Chief Administrative Officer responsible for managing the complex daily operations of one of interior British Columbia’s most desirable mountain communities. Working with a small but mighty and resilient team you will help shape the District’s future, have the opportunity to build the organization and make a significant contribution to the community. If you seek mountains of opportunity, where you can grow your career and be proud to be part of the community you call home, Lillooet awaits!
You are an astute, progressive, and authentic leader; you are open minded, personable, and innovative, a motivator of people with the strategic, business and leadership skills to operate successfully in a complex small community and local government environment. You should have a deep understanding of the principles of good governance, as well as the ability to build consensus and collaborate effectively with elected officials, indigenous communities, stakeholders, and residents.
You are an open and honest communicator and are decisive and adaptable. You are inclusive, a good listener and can lead a senior management team that ensures Council initiatives, policies and programs are effectively implemented. You are passionate about organizational well being and you enjoy and are effective at engaging and building respectful and trusting relationships with the St’át’imc Nation, as well as local groups, businesses, and other governments. You inspire confidence in others and bring exceptional interpersonal, negotiation, communication, and strategic planning skills as well as a commitment to service, results, and the execution of strategy.
You have a bachelor’s degree in business, public administration, or a related discipline and five or more years of progressive senior leadership experience in complex multi-stakeholder local government environments. You demonstrate sincerity, honesty, respect, empathy, and appreciation. You share and are guided by the values of the organization: community, fairness, inclusivity, sustainability, well-being, and environment. You are recognized for your positive local government contributions and are a catalyst for positive corporate change.
If you are a local government leader with a passion for community building and a track record of success, we invite you to consider joining the District of Lillooet as our next Chief Administrative Officer. In return we offer negotiable compensation within a $140,000 to $160,000 range, a commitment to ongoing professional development, a supportive and inclusive work environment, and the opportunity to make a positive community impact.
