Full job description
The Overnight Support Worker is a member of the interdisciplinary team which ensures safety and well-being for residents between the ages of 8-25 years of age. responsible for ensuring that the residents’ well-being and safety is a priority. Team Members of Mount Moriah Homes are not permitted to sleep during their shift and must check in every hour with the other homes. Room checks are to be done hourly to ensure the resident is in their room; this includes physically seeing them in their bed. Nightly cleaning duties must be adhered to as well.
The role is extensive and carries with it responsibilities in the counseling, teaching and training areas, as well as recording daily activities. The Overnight Support Worker must demonstrate high personal competence in the formation and maintenance of caring and therapeutic professional relationships.
- JOB DETAILS
- Ensure that Individual Care Plans are being addressed on a consistent basis.
- Post resident schedule on Outlook calendar and ensure residents input into their electronic devices. This includes:
- Appointments (medical, educational, legal, therapy, financial)
- Meal plan
- Programming
- Family Visits
- Visits at their suite
- Outings
- Other relevant items
- Follows through on specific program goals and objectives needed to ensure the residents Transition to Independence Plan and/or Transition to Adulthood Plan is achieved.
- Ensures that all residents’ basic needs (food, clothing and shelter) are met as well as their recreational, educational and/or medical needs.
- Must post on ShiftNote every time there is an interaction with the resident or every half hour.
- Development of a trusting and non-judgmental relationship with residents.
- Providing all residents with a sense of safety, acceptance, and loving environment.
- Provides appropriate responses to resident’s behaviour.
- Teach residents why it is important to maintain a home in a safe, clean and functional environment. ie: throw garbage away so bugs or germs do not enter the home.
- Support and teach the resident daily living skills such as household management, financial management, accessing resources in the community.
- Ensure resident has clean laundry and bedding (weekly basis)
- How to plan ahead so residents do not run out of groceries or personal hygiene products.
- Ensure residents know where the Canada Food Guide is and why they must follow it and not purchase junk food.
- If a resident has addiction issues (alcohol, drugs, safe sex, vaping, nicotine) then pamphlets and resources will be given to them.
- Assist resident in menu planning and how to prepare healthy meals.
- Life skills training (on-line training and practical applications)
- Meal preparation, food storage and food safety
- House/yard cleaning

- Home safety and repairs
- Money management, banking, credit cards, credit score information
- Personal hygiene and healthy living
- Relationships and sexuality
- Housing options when leaving the program, if applicable

- Computer literacy
- Assistance in the development of individual life plans with realistic goals and objectives.
- Development of a Safety Plan.
- Assistance with appropriate vocational, educational and/or employment opportunities.
- Driver's training.
- Assist resident in seeking part time employment or volunteer opportunities.
- Assist resident in applying for school such as High School, College or University.
- Assist resident in finding resources offered in Edmonton such as: Edmonton Leisure Access Pass, Bus routes, nearby Recreation Centers, Food Bank, Low Income Housing, etc.
- Encourage resident to schedule their own medical appointments
- Assistance with AISH and PDD applications if necessary.
- Assistance with making medical and educational appointments.
- Ensure tasks on Sumac are followed up on.
- Ensure household tasks are completed on SkyLight.
- Take public transport with residents when necessary (appointments, meetings, shopping, etc.)
- SPECIFIC DUTIES
- Is aware of and adheres to, the current policies and procedures of Mount Moriah Homes and is familiar with the Alberta Youth and Child Welfare Act.
- Arrive at least 15 minutes prior to your shift to do a proper shift exchange.
- Demonstrates good writing, communication, and listening skills.
- Maintains professional boundaries with residents, team members and agencies.
- Read ShiftNote when on shift, do not read when not on shift.
- Review the Outlook and SkyLight calendar as this is where all appointments will be.
- Will assist in planning daily activities and the delivery of the program.
- Suggest any improvements in the day-to-day operations.
- Carries out infectious disease procedures as mandated by Mount Moriah Homes policies and procedures.
- In a timely manner, reviews and completes daily logs, medication logs, and other documentation as required on a daily or as required basis.
- Participates in team-oriented work and can apply skills to assist the Director or designate and co-workers.
- Maintains the environment and any equipment clean, safe, orderly and attractive.
- Physically able to go up and down flights of stairs.
- Lift over 25 pounds.
- Assist in rearranging and moving furniture.
- Understands that all materials and information prepared by the staff while carrying out his/her duties remains the property of Mount Moriah Homes.
- Maintains confidentiality of each team member, resident and family.
- Come prepared for work (e.g. proper outerwear, foot wear)
- Bring your own meals.
- Complete all mandatory checklists:
- Hazardous Material
- First Aid (Each suite)
- Emergency Supplies
- Count sharps
- Food inventory
- Print pictures
- All other duties as assigned by the management.
