Site Operations Manager – Skyview BESS

Location

Skyview BESS Project Site, Spencerville, Ontario (approx. 45 minutes South of Ottawa), Full-Time Onsite

The Site Operations Manager is a new position that reports to the Director, Operations, and has no direct reports.

Accountabilities and Key Functions

The Site Operations Manager is the senior onsite authority responsible for the safe, compliant, and reliable operation of the Skyview Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) facility.

With Long-Term Service Agreements (LTSA) in place covering the BESS equipment and inverters, the Site Operations Manager is primarily accountable for:

  • Balance of Plant (BOP) systems
  • Substation, MV and HV electrical infrastructure
  • Site facilities and auxiliary power systems
  • Safety leadership and regulatory compliance
  • Contractor coordination and execution oversight
  • Day-to-day operations, monitoring, and reporting

The Site Operations Manager will lead a small onsite operations team (1–2 technicians/operators) and act as the primary interface between field execution, remote operations, OEM service providers, utilities, regulators, and internal asset management teams.

This is a full-time onsite role requiring relocation to the project location.

ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily site operations to ensure safe and reliable performance
  • Manage MV/HV electrical systems, substation equipment, and BOP infrastructure
  • Coordinate preventative and corrective maintenance activities
  • Lead site safety program and regulatory compliance efforts
  • Supervise contractors and onsite staff
  • Monitor plant performance and respond to alarms and outages
  • Maintain site documentation, reports, and operational records
  • Act as onsite point of contact for OEMs, utilities, regulators, and emergency services
  • Lead emergency response and site preparedness.

Site Operations & Performance

  • Own daily operational readiness of the BESS facility ensuring safe and continuous availability for dispatch and grid services
  • Oversee real-time monitoring in coordination with Remote Operations / NOC
  • Ensure operation within approved envelopes, electrical limits, and regulatory requirements
  • Lead first-line response to alarms, outages, and abnormal conditions
  • Track availability, derates, forced outages, and operational events with accurate documentation
  • Supervise onsite operations personnel in execution of daily activities.

Substation, MV/HV & BOP Oversight

  • Provide operational leadership for:

o HV substation equipment

o MV collection system

o Gen-tie infrastructure

o Auxiliary power systems

o Grounding systems

o Control room systems and SCADA interfaces

  • Coordinate preventative and corrective maintenance activities across all BOP systems
  • Review testing, inspections, thermography, and electrical maintenance activities (NETA/OEM-based)
  • Ensure site infrastructure, roads, drainage, fencing, buildings, and stormwater systems are maintained in compliance with permits and best practices.

Safety, Compliance & Regulatory Leadership

  • Act as the site Responsible Person for Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) compliance
  • Implement and enforce site safety program including:

o HV/MV electrical safety

o LOTO and energized work controls

o Lithium-ion battery risk awareness

o Fire detection and suppression systems

o Contractor safety compliance

  • Lead:

o Safety meetings and toolbox talks

o Contractor orientations

o Site audits and inspections

  • Ensure compliance with:

o Electrical Safety Authority (ESA)

o AHJs and Fire Marshal requirements

o Environmental permits and SWPPP/EMP requirements

o Utility interconnection agreements

  • Lead incident investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective actions.

Maintenance & Contractor Management

  • Plan, coordinate, and oversee all onsite O&M activities including:

o Preventative maintenance

o Corrective maintenance

o Inspections and testing

o Grounds and facility upkeep

  • Supervise contractors and service providers ensuring:

o Scope compliance

o Safety adherence

o Quality workmanship

o Proper documentation

  • Review and approve work orders, service reports, and maintenance records
  • Maintain site readiness for OEM interventions under LTSA agreements.

Team Leadership

  • Lead and develop a small onsite operations team (1–2 team members)
  • Assign daily tasks and oversee execution
  • Ensure training, competency, and safety compliance of site staff
  • Build a strong operational culture focused on safety, reliability, and accountability.

OEM, Utility & Stakeholder Interface

  • Serve as the onsite point of contact for:

o BESS and PCS OEM service teams

o EMS and SCADA providers

o Utility operators and system operators

o Inspectors, regulators, and emergency responders

  • Coordinate scheduled testing, outages, and compliance activities
  • Manage site access, inductions, and stakeholder communications.

Documentation, Reporting & Asset Support

  • Maintain accurate site records including:

o Operating logs

o Maintenance history

o Safety documentation

o Drawings, manuals, and permits

  • Provide regular reports on:

o Site performance and availability

o Safety metrics and incidents

o Maintenance execution and backlog

  • Support asset management and engineering teams with operational insights.

Emergency Response & Site Readiness

  • Lead onsite response for emergency and abnormal conditions including:

o Electrical faults

o Fire system events

o Battery-related incidents

o Severe weather impacts

  • Coordinate with remote operations, OEM emergency teams, and local emergency services
  • Maintain emergency response plans, drills, and preparedness.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years’ experience in utility-scale power generation, substations, or energy infrastructure operations
  • Strong hands-on experience with:

o MV and HV electrical systems

o Substation operations and maintenance

o Industrial plant operations

o Contractor supervision

  • Demonstrated safety leadership in high-risk electrical environments
  • Experience working alongside OEM service providers under LTSA-style arrangements
  • Comfortable acting as the onsite authority during outages and emergency conditions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience operating utility-scale BESS, substations, or renewable energy facilities
  • Electrical trade certification (Red Seal Electrician, Power Engineer, CET, or equivalent)
  • Familiarity with Ontario regulatory environment (ESA, AHJs, utilities)
  • OEM training related to BESS, PCS, EMS, or fire systems.

COMPENSATION

  • Base salary range: $130,000 – $145,000 CAD.
  • Target annual bonus: 10% target bonus.
  • Compensation will vary depending on experience and qualifications.
