About WIRED & WATT

WIRED stands for Women's Interconnection and Retention in Electrical Disciplines. It's a program designed not only to get women into the trade with WATT (Workplace Alternative Trades Training), but also help ensure their success throughout their whole career. If you don't already have experience in electrical, WATT is a government-funded fast-track pre-apprenticeship program designed to remove barriers to entry into the electrical trade. WATT is training workers how employers require, when and where they are needed. This initiative is part of a provincial and federal effort to increase diversity and inclusion in construction by prioritizing applications from equity-seeking groups, including:

  • Women
  • Indigenous Peoples
  • Youth-at-Risk (up to age 29)
  • Newcomers
  • Racialized Minorities
  • 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals

NO EXPERIENCE NEEDED! WATT is your fast-track pathway into the Union and Electrical Apprenticeship through The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW).

WATT is an Electrical Pre-Apprenticeship Program that leads directly to employment!

NOTE: Applications of those in areas of high labour market demand are prioritized. In accordance with site restrictions, many jobs are limited to those 18+ years of age. Due to limited public transit service and inconsistent and (at times) rapidly changing job locations applicants with consistent access to personal reliable transportation will rank higher in selection than those who do not.

Through WATT you will...

  • Take CHARGE of your career
  • Learn hands-on skills employers have identified as valuable on the work site.
  • Be provided with an independent learning plan (ILP) and support in essential skills upgrading throughout your apprenticeship (to help you prepare for your Level 1 training and all the way through to Red Seal).
  • Be provided with your basic tools and steel-toe boots required to start your career as an electrician
  • Have access to additional supports as required
  • Have basic living expenses and transportation covered if travelling for training or required to participate

To apply directly online go to:

https://wjets.ca/watt

As an IBEW Apprentice Electrician, you will work under the guidance of experienced electricians to learn the trade and gain hands-on skills in electrical installations and repairs. Your pre-apprenticeship training will focus on the skills and attributes that employers have identified as most valuable and critical to success in early apprenticeship.

Through successful completion of WATT (Workplace Alternative Trades Training), you will be offered the valuable opportunity to be sponsored in your apprenticeship, have access to the supports you need to succeed and earn while you learn! Guaranteed scheduled wage increases, benefits and RRSPs are included. Speak to an organizer in your local union to learn more.

If you are looking to kickstart your career as an Electrician, this role provides a solid foundation for growth, advancement and success in an industry where you can earn over 100k/year in less than 4 years!
