Position(s): Relief/Casual employees are employed on an "on-call" basis to cover absences of a regular employee or augment staff during peak periods. Casual employees are expected to maintain current contact information with the employer.
Department: TDCSS Residential Services; TDCSS Program Services
Summary:
The Awake Night Worker (Support Worker) role is to assist clients to live successfully in residential settings such as group homes. Using a respectful, person-served-centered team approach, the Awake Night Worker provides care, guidance, and support to persons served during the night. The position holder will serve and respect everyone’s dignity, privacy, and independence while maintaining a safe, comfortable, and clean-living environment.
The successful candidate will be responsible to:
- Monitor persons served through the night and attend to any medical and behavioral needs that arise during the night.
- Follow through on direction regarding specific residents left by the day staff.
- Notify staff of any major problems or emergencies. Responds to emergencies in accordance with established policies and procedures.
- Supported persons served with their morning and evening routines at the beginning and end of the shift.
- Support persons served to follow the house rules.
- Support persons served with their morning routine.
- Provide the medical and personal needs of persons served in a respectful, proactive manner as directed by the Supervisor and/or the person served service plan.
- Ensure that charting and documentation is completed in Share Vision or other agency provided database system as per agency protocol.
- Perform housekeeping duties such as vacuuming, dusting, emptying garbage, cleaning, and laundry. Performs minor building maintenance such as changing light bulbs.
- Report maintenance needs to supervisor.
- Secure the building by arming alarms and locking doors and windows.
- Prepare and assist persons served in breakfast preparation.
- Present a positive image of the Agency in the community. This includes but is not limited to abiding by the TDCSS’s Policy and Procedures including the Code of Conduct and the Code of Ethics.
- Utilize a variety of approved, person served centered, respectful techniques and approaches to provide care, guidance, and support.
- Prepare for each shift by becoming familiar with current person served/support issues.
- Actively participate in staff meetings, performance reviews, and planning sessions, as requested by the Supervisor.
- Treat all matters relating to the person served, TDCSS Community Living Services business, and TDCSS business as confidential.
- Maintain files and logs according to standard practice and TDCSS policy and procedure.
- Maintain current working knowledge of and abide by all relevant Program and Society policy and procedures, and Federal and provincial legislation.
- Report all noteworthy changes and/or potentially difficult situations to the Supervisor and make recommendations for solutions using approved procedures.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Supervisor.
Hours:
· Various – no guaranteed hours, however, as seniority builds, casuals move higher on the call list and could expect frequent work. May work up to 30-40 hours/week
· Schedules are based on program and organizational needs
Shifts:
NIGHTS ONLY-WEEKDAYS WITH 2 WEEKENDS (FRIDAY, SATURDAY OR SUNDAY)
Rates of Pay:
Casuals are compensated in accordance with the job classification which they are working.
Awake Night Residence Worker - Grid 6 (step 1-4) (shift hours 10pm- 8am)
Union Status: Union membership required
Qualifications:
This position is gender inclusive. Specific worksites/ positions are Gender Specific.
Education & Experience
Required :
· Grade 12 diploma, or equivalent
· A combination of education, training and/or recent related experience will be given consideration for this position.
Preferred:
· A relevant diploma or certificate with experience providing service to people who have a developmental disability.
· One year of experience working with individuals who have a developmental disability
· Mandt Training or Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (Training Provided by Employer)
· Class 5 Drivers license or willingness to gain it during probation
· Class 4 Drivers license or willingness to gain it during first year of employment
Skills and Abilities
Required:
· Good oral, written and interpersonal communication skills
· Willingness and ability to work a flexible schedule
· Must be able to plan and participate in a wide variety of social, and physical activities.
· Attendance and participation in community events
· Proficient in use of computers
· Willingness and ability to adapt to various and/or changing work situations.
· Problem-solving ability
· Ability to prioritize tasks and adapt plans as necessary while meeting the needs of Persons Served

Required:
· TB Skin Clearance test
· Proof of Current Tetanus Shot
· Provincial Attorney General Criminal Record Check Clearance
· Class 5 Driver's License

· Emergency Community Care First Aid (or Level 1 equivalent) - may be obtained within probationary period
· MCFD Hub Clearance (mandatory to work in child/youth residential programs)

Preferred:
· Class 5 /4 BC Driver’s License
· Willingness to obtain Business Insurance on personal vehicle in order to transport Persons Served in community based programs.
Pay and Benefits will be in accordance with TDCSS and BCGEU Local 312 Collective Agreement. This position requires union membership.
This position requires the successful applicant to be ready and able to work with all persons served and to provide intimate personal care when necessary.
